Colorado Fires Are The Real Deal

I'm in a semi-shitty hotel in a Denver suburb but feel lucky as I watched all kinds of people get turned away today. The hotels are full.

Over 30,000 people between Colorado Springs and North of Denver have been evacuated and are (hopefully only temporarily) homeless. I even got to watch a helicopter and C130 drop water on a fire outside of Boulder today.

Every car in Denver has been rented. There are none to be had and the last I saw available for my 3 day stay were around $850. I'm cabbing it and mooching rides.

It's weird because it feels perfectly fine where I am, yet relatively nearby it's a firestorm of death and destruction. A very tragic situation for many people.

Damn, I wasn't paying that much attention to it - saw a few posts on Facebook by people who like to blow everything out of proportion but that looks bad.

One of my coworkers lost her house yesterday/Wednesday. One of our consultants who I do not know was also certain to lose her home as of around 3PM/CST yesterday.

Very real.

Fewer firefighters is the answer...that is obviously.

One of my coworkers in Denver said her house is fine but when she flew out of town the other day, she got a bird's eye view and said it was like a disaster movie scene. She said: Imagine what it would be like to leave your house knowing it won't be there when you get back.

The younger brother of one of my best friends lives in Colorado Springs area and when I asked my buddy if his brother's family was ok, he said he'd asked the same question, but hadn't heard back yet.

Very real indeed.

My driver just went there to be on a national fire management team. He will be setting up portable cell and radio towers. Ungood.

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to how many of these folks didn't clear the brush around their house well enough or often enough? Every time there is a fire in AZ, that's all they ever talk about.

That is the case. We just had a class on homes being defendable or losers. Sadly, and this is not emphasized enough, you may very well have done your homework, but if a neighbor or two have not...

The big three for things like this are fuel, weather and topography. Obviously the fuel and topography aren't going to change. Well, the fuel is being consumed. Until there is a change in the weather, very ungood.

With the wind pushing the fire through the fine flashy fuels (grass, brush) and actually preheating and drying out everything ahead with radiant heat, homes don't stand a chance.

Used to see evidence of that in the high desert area where I grew up-- you'd see the ground charred for miles and then a green manicured lawn around a house that looked fine. I think the rules are a little different in forested areas though.

Goats. Everybody should get a herd of goats. They'll keep that brush cleared, feed you and provide sexual favors if you're in to that.

Fire danger v. @ on your property danger-- not a tough choice.

Are you referring to Katrina or Bounty-Gate?

I encourage YIHB to wait on his roof for rescue during a fire.
