I saw in a search a couple of you have been to Ocracoke. Any helpful hints, suggestions for a first timer?

I spent a week there a good 12 or so years ago. Really nice, very mellow. We rented bikes and rode everywhere for the most part.

Mellow is good. Not a big fisherman myself.

Rip tides and sharks. I'd stay out of the water if I were you.

Used to spend a week a year on the island to the north and take the ferry to Orcacoke every other year for a day trip. The town is fairly small and as Nappy says, mellow, very mellow. The beach north of town is pretty consistently ranked as one of the best in the country. There's a population of "wild" horses that are left over from shipwrecks but are now in a big pen. You could easily get around on just bikes. Lots of pirate references as Blackbeard's ship allegedly lays off one end of the island.

It's been about ten years since I've been there. Like freki, we would stay on Hatteras for a week and make a day trip to Ocracoke. You should stop at the British Cemetery, it only take a few minutes and we owe those young men.
