Gov't agencies purchasing huge quantities of ammo

Google fu this and you will see some interesting purchase reqs of ammo by some surprising agencies.

National Weather Service (possibly National Marine Fisheries Service): 46,000 rounds of hollow points
Social Security Administration: 174,000 rounds
DHS: over 1,000,000,000 rounds

Why do these agencies need armory level supplies of bullets? DHS at least has some justification but why does the SSA need any? Is every bureaucracy becoming weaponized?

The smell of this, I do not like it.

Yeah, I heard one of Alex Jones' sites was chirping about it.

Not sure what to make of it, but I guess some fairly mainstream news outlets have covered it a touch.

There haven't been new facilities built in years to produce ammo-- so while demand spiked during the war on terror, supply didn't increase. Guess what effect that had on price?

Increases in govt purchases act to increase demand.

Finally, the Social Security Administration thinks of a way to keep the program from going bankrupt.

That's really not a lot of ammo per person.

I'm guessing the SSA has security at its various offices, making this roughly as scary as your local PD's ammo purchase.

EDIT: Looks like Homeland Security provides the office security and this ammo is for SSA investigators. Still not scary.

Hollow point bullets???

I would love to see some justification for purchasing hollow point.

Because that's what 99% of security and law enforcement buy and use.

Nailed it right on the head. Even if someone is shooting a paltry 200 rounds a month (which is 1 morning session) thats 2400 rounds a year per person plus duty ammo of maybe 1000. Not a lot there.

You guys don't no nuthin'. When you're on the gubmint dole, they issue you free rounds every month. The number per person varies with what neighborhood you live in. I get 200 45 rounds per month. Been getting that for 14 years now. I'm due for a new free weapon but haven't sent in the paperwork yet

Looks like the percodan drip is wearing off.

What this really boils down to is the government agencies wasting taxpayer money. Using Federal HST for their regular practice is excessive. They should shoot enough of their carry round to be confident that it works in their pistols, but the bulk of their shooting should be with cheaper ammo.

No they shouldnt. Train with what you use. Especially women and novices who dont have years of weapons training behind them.

That's an attitude fostered by people spending someone else's money.

How many people who buy their own ammo do that? And how many women and novices (or anyone) can tell whether the bullet leaving their barrel is Federal's latest and greatest vs. a cheap FMJ of the same weight with a similar amount of powder pushing it?

Sorry man but I actually speak from experience. Similar situation to this, a police force saving money buyiing cheap ball ammo for practice and training. Turns out if they had used the duty ammo they would have found out that it didnt feed well and the pistol wouldn't have jammed when the officer finally needed it.

There's also a big difference in recoil and feel between 9mm practice ammo and 9mm +P+ defensive rounds. I'd guess almost all of the above is 40mm and .357 Sig, though.

The answer is to test both; shoot both for practice- 90% ball to 10% HP, and carry HP. Everyone of my handguns is matched with HP ammo that I know will run flawlessly. However, it's friggin expensive, so most of my practice is will surplus ball ammo.

1. The Obama Administration wants to keep the bitching down as he winds down the "War on Terror". Big ammo purchases will keep domestic suppliers happy. Most of it will probably be "surplused" to local Police forces.

2. The UN Arms Tread Treaty was "stopped" before it could be signed by UN members. The NRA took credit for doing this. More likely domestic weapons manufacturers bitched about it. Obama wants to sort of give 'em some Corporate welfare to keep 'em quiet when this treaty comes up again.

Break it down to how many rounds this is per person in each agency and its really nothing.

The Department of Homeland Security employs about 188,000 federal employees, as well as about 200,000 contracted workers. Senator Joe Lieberman has explained the cost savings of hiring contracted workers instead of federal employees.
Roughly 250 rounds per person. Not even a really good training day.

just civil servants focusing on job security. when the tea party types show up to shut down the government, the workers will be able to defend themselves and keep their jobs.
