IGx Docs. Rape

Akin, in the interview, was asked to explain his opposition to abortion for pregnancies caused by rape.

"It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," he said.
Besides the religio-political biases of this guy, is there any medical evidence that women's bodies "shut down" pregnancies from rape? Never heard that one.

Have you never heard of the rape scale? He's talking aboutlegitimate rapes. If the victim gets pregnant, that means the rape was not legit (perhaps she was dressed provocatively). This is bromedicine at its best.

He came out with an apology the next day.

Jeezus some motherfuckers are only alive because it's illegal to kill them.

I love it when people say they "misspoke"

He apologized that he misspoke - may have hurt feelings of rape victims. But he did not say his data from doctors was incorrect in that rape victims shut down pregnancies. I am curious if there is any valid data to support that, regardless of it's implications.

If you're concerned about it, I suggest you get one of those home pregnancy tests. They aren't always accurate until a few weeks into the pregnancy though. YOu could see your OB for a more accurate test if you think you might be pregnant.

I'm starting to think Mel Carnahan is the best guy for that Senate seat.

The adult pregnancy rate associated with rape is estimated to be 4.7%. This information, in conjunction with estimates based on the U.S. Census, suggest that there may be 32,101 annual rape-related pregnancies among American women over the age of 18.

We're almost there. What is the pregnancy rate as a function of consensual unprotected sex sessions?

Not only is there no evidence, I've actually read the pregnancy rates are higher. That was a single source, and a few years ago, but if I can find it I'll post. Something about there being some kind of sick evolutionary "rape as reproductive strategy" thing.

The problem with comparing it to consensual sex is you're more likely to have a large population of people who are trying hard to avoid pregnancy.

Akin is retarded. No such physiological mechanism exists. Any reputable OB-GYN would laugh in your face if you asked. A doc told me the rate per incident of consensual unprotected sex is 2.5%, comparable to the study Quack pulled up.

If women couldn't get pregnant from rape then Serbian rape camps would not have been nearly as effective.

What I had heard also is that the rate of pregnancy from virgins getting raped was much higher than expected, leading some to theorize that there is a mechanism by which the female body can release an ovum at an abnormal part of her monthly cycle in an effort to get pregnant...particularly when sex happens few and far between (or not as of yet in the virgins' cases).

I once saw as show about sex on TV (so it must be accurate) that had all kinds of odd sperm facts including:
>> If a chick is fucking her lover vs. her husband she has less backwash and hence more spermies remain in her and have an increased shot at glory.
>> If a man has been separated from his wife for a period of a couple of days, his ejaculate includes hunter sperm that goes after any outliers left around by some stray dude (see assorted Shape vs. Crusty posts for a real life example).

I have no idea if any of this is true or how it could be verified scientifically, but I can see a Missouri fundamentalist grabbing on to similar "facts" to bolster his no abortion at any time for any reason politics.

After all, Missouri brought us John Ashcroft who thought it necessary to clothe topless statues in the DOJ because they offended his moral sensibilities.

It's kind of a witch trial thing. If you get pregnant, you must have secretly wanted it.

bucket,

this from the guttmacher institute:
• In 2006, there were 52 unintended pregnancies for every 1,000 women aged 15–44. In other words, about 5% of reproductive-age women have an unintended pregnancy each year.
presumably some of those who got pregnant by mistake were using birth control, so it's not a perfect comparison, but it's close to the percentage of pregnancies resulting from rape.

Dr. DownLow, I saw the same show! I was a little weirded out by it...they had a small camera jammed up in this chick's snatch while a dude was dickin' her down. There was something about the orgasmic response by the chick actually having an evolutionary purpose...if I remember correctly is helps pull the swimmers into the cervix...so husband drops a load no orgasm and no pregnancy. Boyfriend drops a load...well you see where this is going and now I just realized I've got to get a dna test on those two mongoloid boys of mine. Something is not quite right. I may be gone for a few days.

I bet Jezzie and Signaid are having a laughing fit over a bunch of dumbass dudes talking about chicks' eggs and load dropping.

What's the pregnancy rate when sterno is used as lubricant? Shape wants to know but he's too shy to ask.
