What does a bear box weight? Have you used them?

Here in Yellowstone, we hang our food on a rope over 100 yards from the campsite. The hanging food must be 12 feet off the ground and about 8 feet from the nearest tree trunk. We're used to that and carry our ropes etc.

But now, in places like Yosemite, you have to carry a Bear Box. Has anyone done this? What do they weight, exclusive of food? Can it hold a week's worth of eats for one guy? How big a pain in the ass is it to carry on a back pack?

Just keep your food in a picnic basket. Bears love picnics.

A Bear BOX is made of metal and is the size of a foot locker - it's bolted to a concrete pad at your campsite in the Yosemite established sites like camp 4 and is not portable. Now the food containers you can usually rent - buy or make to carry with you while packing are a different story. They are made of PVC and round - not too heavy but still a bit of a pain for backpacking. Below is one of many examples available.

Pretty easy to make your own if you are handy.

Bears hate bacon. Keep a couple bacon sammiches with u in ur tent at night and you're golden. Also, if u see a bear - RUN! Otherwise they will fuck you in the mouth.

Pitt Bulls love small children drizzled in warm gravy. They snuggle up and get all protective. Also, sharks won't attack you if you cut yourself in the water because they can smell that your blood is human.

See, I'm looking for a new backpack and want to be able to go to these idiot places that demand that you carry a bear box. Because of all the help I received here, I was able to settle on this pack.

Apparently, not a shitpile. I'm guessing 4 pounds. Climber's informative post didn't say.

Wait: edit, it did say: 2 lbs 12 oz.

The cabin has sliding 4 inch thick wooden doors. Bear proof.
