Im out looking for a 1/4 acre that borders a State Park with running/biking/hunting. I am thinking about building this on a poured walk out basement foundation. Should take about 2 years to complete with a huge deck.
I hope I can pull it off.

100% awesome. Everything about it. Idea, design, place, decking. I'm thinking of a place with a sea view somewhere wild - either a refurb or something very modern that's mostly underground - this sort of concept:

Would like geothermal heat source, a couple of acres nearby, fresh water, woodlands. Am about 10 years off starting to do anything about it with the kids but it's something I'm very drawn to. Fuck knows what it would cost so I'll probably compromise on a lot.

DT, for now a get away, but maybe permanent in the future ( I would build a 40 X 60 outbuilding then). I like the idea of smaller.

Too complicated. Just buy a condo in Florida.

I've been to Florida. I hope it sinks. I need more of a survivalist cabin but modern.

Everything cool except the flat roof. Those can be big problems. And reconsider a basement near a body of water.

I'm on my phone so I can't link photos, but google shipping container cabins.
On a limited budget they can be pretty sweet.

Andy, on a hill @ 100 yards from the lake, out of and above the flood zone.
Ive looked at the container houses but the skills arent around here yet.

Northern Illinois or Southern Wisconsin. Depends on land availability.

Flat roofs are nothing but trouble and he cost of doing them right isn't worth it. A half basement under the house is doable near a lake if you are on a slope.

Sloped Metal roof to have a loft bedroom/play area for the kiddies. Front to back into a water collection system.
Jack, I saw that. I have had enough conversations with the tumbleweed people to feel safe doing this. Its the concrete and septic guys that are giving me a headache.

This is the wife's option. Still with a finished exposed basement.

Having to sweep the road for IED's daily is a turn off. Nice view though.
