In a ceremony that was more joyful than solemn, the U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned the USS Michael Murphy, a sleek new warship named for a Navy SEAL who died in Afghanistan at age 29.
A true hero.

A Penn State grad too.

We built a vet's memorial on campus for him. Friend of mine was the contractor who actually built it. Looks great.

Of course some monumental douchebags on BMX bikes, who regularly use the campus as their urban playground, immediately noted the ideal curved shape to the memorial and how it would likely give a good vertical carve, and took advantage of it. I'm sure it was in the middle of the night, and the probably didn't realize just how badly it would be marred. Too bad one of them didn't faceplant into it.

Since been returned to its pristine initial state by students.

The BMX-ers have not revealed themselves.

I hope they die impaled on their BMX handlebars, but there remains the possibility that maybe Murphy was an X-Games kind of dude and would have secretly appreciated someone pulling off a full carve around the whole circle of the memorial.

I talked to Marcus once about Murphy. About what kind of guy he was. Theres a big chance he would think it cool as hell.

edit: to clarify, I dont know Marcus personally. I was introed by a mutual friend over dinner and drinks.

TOM, that's pretty cool about having a chance to meet Marcus and it's cool that Murph probably would have appreciated the Wall Of Deathing on his monument!

Here's the first thought I had when I saw "Murph": That's the Seal dude from Lone Survivor who dies bravely, left a lovely fiancée / wife behind and who has a Crossfit WOD named after him.

That last part. The implication to my mind in seeing WODs names after special forces guys is that there's an association. That Murph was a crossfitter. But that's not actually stated on the crossfit site. It's implied but can then be denied easily if there's a direct question by saying its just "a tribute".

I don't know if any of Murph or the others (some firemen, some army, some navy) ever did crossfit. My suspicion is that the vast majority didn't. But the crossfit site expressly says it is used by SF and has a few pics of bearded team guys in front of jeeps, guys working out in FOBs etc. It's both exceedingly clever and exceedingly distasteful.
