I have turned into my mother whom I used to make fun of for not knowing how to program the VCR.

I don't understand the social networks, but I need to do some marketing for a couple of projects I'm working on.

Here's what I know (and I may be wrong):

1. Facebook is a closed network and you now have to pay for ads to get your public posts and pages seen.
2. Twitter is for people who are attached to their phones and get a lot out of one-liners and cell-phone mirror pics. Well, I'm just bitter cause I don't understand it. I linked it to my fb page and let fb do the work.
3. Just getting started with Google+. I'm not sure how this works, but I'm trying.

I'm doing as much reading and research as I can. But, it seems like there's a whole new language being used with this stuff and I don't know how much is important vs how much is just nonsense and/or specific to the particular goals of the people using it.

Does anyone have any experience, advice, insight, to share?

Also part of what I do for a living, but we work with advertisers that are spending big budgets (10k min usually) so I don't know a lot about free marketing.

What are you selling? If it's a material product, you definitely want to look into Pinterest. If it's something people will want to look at pictures of, it will explode there.

Pinterest has a lot of guys on there (a shit load internationally), but it is female dominated here in the US. I still think that it has the potential to be the backbone of any social media marketing campaign.
