It's late season blackpowder in my neck of the woods and i just spent the last 10 hours deer hunting with no luck. On the hike back out to the truck I did some Chantrelle mushroom hunting. Packed out 5-7 pounds of mushrooms. It was a 4 mile hike back out of the brush, so there was plenty of time to look for deer and hunt mushrooms.

Now before you degenerate druggies get all excited, these are not magic mushrooms. These are some of the best tasting mushrooms you can find. It's kind of late in the season, so I was lucky to find some nice specimens. In a week, these will be no where to be found.

Ever hunt those quarry access roads on Weyerhauser property up out of Roy? Not bad hunting for West. Wa and I'd always run across cauliflower mushrooms in there.

My dad used to grow mushrooms on his property down on the Oregon south coast. I can't remember the details, but he'd get boards, drill holes into them, plant the fungi(us?), and set them out in the woods in a good spot. He got a couple of decent harvests if I remember correctly, at least enough for personal use. Not sure if they grow that far north, but some of the varieties are worth a lot.

Pacific northwest is perfect mushroom growing country. Chantelles are a true delicacy and are only harvested in the wild. For some reason, they can't be domesticated.

I'm going to grow some Shitake nd oyster mushrooms. Shitake are the type grown on hardwood logs. One 3 foot 6 inch log will produce 15 pounds of mushrooms over 4-5 fruitings. Oysters are grown in bags of straw.

I've only hunted Fort Lewis, south of Olympia, kistap county and Hood canal area. Roy seemed to Fn populated.


I've yet to see any Califlower mushrooms this season. Lots of chantrelles and morels though.

If I remember right, he was able to grow one or two of those. Unsure if he was ever successful with the morels.

what kind of deer you hunting? I see reference to the North West, so I suspect Blacktail or Mulies.

I've been trying to fill my doe tag with my recurve bow with no luck. Can't get one in range. My brother killed a damn monster whitetail last week during our rifle season.

Yep, it's blacktail season.

Whitetail in WA state are located south along the Oregon border and out east near Idaho.
