Some of you might remember I mentioned the family next door who were having an even rougher time than me.
Their little girl died this morning. She was ten. I always knew she had even worse odds than me, but I had been hoping so hard that things would break her way.

Sad news.

That sucks so bad, I'm very sorry to hear. My sympathies for all.

These gestures won't do anything to ease the pain, but they will be appreciated.

Be present, go to the services, bring some food, and be there for them when the hoopla of death is over and they're still grieving but 99% of everybody else has moved on - especially when they want to talk. I never thought that stuff mattered but have seen over the years that it does and tiny acts of kindness might be remembered for years.

Echoing DrLove: there will an initial outpouring of support from all their friends and family, and then a lot of those people will withdraw so that their ongoing involvement is less than it ever was. Don't be one of them; continue to make yourself available, let the family know that they can share their grief with you.

Saddest possible news, I know it hurts everyone around the family too. Best advice I heard is actions over words, listen rather than talk, and be in it for the long run.

What he said. Lost both parents to old age/cancer and a cousin to a prison brawl and a niece to an overdose and an aunt to heart failure, and it's always these things that make the difference, both at the time and in recollection years later.
