Bland? Howard? What in the fuck? I don't really have contact with hipsters but if this an example of their bullshit I can understand why people hate them.
And how in the fuck do you get the long link for YouTube videos now?

Fucking hell!
The sidewalks are already so congested that every day is a battle with the temptation to shove a motherfucker into oncoming traffic.
"It'll be fun!"
Yes it will.

I work with contractors in NYC on a daily basis. In fact, I just completed an NYC Dept. of Buildings site safety management course. These sidewalk sheds (basically protective scaffolding to protect pedestrians from falling objects due to work overhead) have very strict requirements and the contractors pay out the ass for insurance. Any deviation from the standard whether on the contractors part or a third party leaves them subject to stiff fines. If it results in injury, it would leave the scaffolding contractor's, the general contractor's and the building owner's collective asses swinging in the breeze.
Even if the fucking hipsters were held liable, they are probably uninsured or so lightly insured that it is worthless to sue them and the injured party would go after the deepest pockets. There's already enough bullshit to get by in order to get things built in this town. Fuck these fucking worthless hipster fucking fucktards.

But, but, it can be a "fun space" with just few minor changes.
Hehe

Artsy Hipster Scum wrote:Softwalks began two years ago as a project at Parsons the New School for Design. Inspired by watching stretches of Broadway blossom into pedestrian plazas, we wondered if sidewalk sheds could act as the framework for a similar type of social space. After researching, prototyping and testing our ideas on the streets, Softwalks recently won the Student Category of Fast Company's Innovation By Design Award!

Has anybody explained that to these chuckleheads?

Stop your skeptic. This is so much cooler than using awnings and chairs that could actually be moved around as needed.
Why? Because its postmodern, or something.

I think it's nice putting turf down instead of concrete on teh sidewalks and having benches and nice places to socialize. I"m donating some money.

The first thing I want to do when I see scaffolding is to find a nice spot under it where shit can hit me in the head.

looks like they have anticipated these issues.
Softwalks hovers over many lines—legal liability, structural soundness, durability, public versus private property—the list goes on. However, rather than run from these obstacles, we have continued to network and establish meaningful relationships with innovative BIDs, enthusiastic scaffolding contractors, and forward thinking developers.
The biggest risk Softwalks faces is exposure to liability. New York City is infamously litigious. A very small percentage of pedestrians slip, trip, fall, and run into things, and a smaller percentage decide to file lawsuits for compensation. Acknowledging these risks, we are consulting with specialists in streetscape design, volunteer lawyers, and are investing in event insurance for the pilot project.

I've never been in a city where something like this wouldn't interfere with the flow of foot traffic during busy hours. I can't imagine that local restaurants and coffee shops would be happy about it either. Sometimes the good idea fairy shouldn't be encouraged.

I notice they didn't mention the Dept. of Buildings.

The flow of foot traffic is a fucking nightmare.
The sheds themselves impede pedestrians, this soft walks shit will completely fuck things up. I haven't seen them anywhere; I try to stay out of hipster neighborhoods.

You (non-ironic) squares don't get it. With cars banned from the area people can freely walk in the streets. They can also play hacky sack or complain about their student loans while juggling next to a hat with spare change in it without being oppressed by your narrow concept of what a street is.
Fascists.

It all sounds so nice on paper.
Until the first homeless guy sits on one of these things, or a bag of coke is found, and everyone freaks out and next thing you know they'll start banning assault chairs.
