I don't worry about this. I just megadose on Vitamin D to build up my immune system to the point where I can drink straight up protozoa scumworm cocktails for breakfast.

i've had one for a bit, though never used it except to try it out once. i didn't die from the tap water, but i did almost turn my face inside out. it takes more blowjob power than i have at the moment.

This is what I use. Steri-pen. Very light weight. Takes less than a minute or so for a quart. I drank water from streams in Nepal using this. No problems. Light, fast, uses AA bats. This is the technology. $50.00.
SteriPEN harnesses the brilliant power of ultraviolet light to make water safe to drink. It’s the same technology used by leading bottled water manufacturers, as well as major cities in the U.S., Europe and Asia to purify water. View the WQA video explanation Extensive testing has proven SteriPEN to be safe and effective, eliminating over 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and protozoa that cause water-borne illness. SteriPEN has earned the Water Quality Association’s Gold Seal, certifying its effectiveness.

For $50-75 you can get a small hand-pumped microfilter that will allow you to fill water containers.

The filters require pumping, which is time consuming and somethings frustrating if you're backpacking and the filter needs to be replaced.
Steri-Pen: fill the canteen, stir for less than a minute for a quart. You're good to go.

Some of us like to do things outside proto. Just in case you decide to try it:

Sterilizing disgusting water still leaves you with disgusting water. I've used a filter in water that I would prefer not to drink even after it was safe.

Pour it through a bandana. When you filter water with a lot of sediment, the damn thing clogs up. You gotta rinse the filter (in what? all you got is disgusting water). Clogged filters take 15 minutes or so to pump. Then they just give out...
