C. Everett Koop is dead
In 1999, I sent the summer in Rio de Janeiro, training jiujitsu. I paid a taxi driver to show me around, and we talked while we drove. He said that in Brazil, sports was something for professionals until around 1989 when C. Everett Koop had made a series of big addresses on public health in Brazil. His view was that that kicked off the Brazilian obsession with public fitness, like not smoking and exercising, and it gave me new appreciation for the man and his impact.
