Aleks Emelianenko at Holy Mountain Atos

In the beginning, Aleksander Emelianenko was the scariest man in mixed martial arts.
In December of 2012, Aleks caused a disturbance on a plane, in his native Russia.
"During the flight, the renowned athlete caused a breach of public order," reported the Russian language site RSport. "He spoke loudly, molested passengers, provoked them into fights, did not react to remarks from the cabin crew, demanded liquor, used foul language, smoked in the airplane."
Emelianenko pled guilty and received a fine of 700 rubles, or about $23.
Shortly after the MMA's scariest man on a plane incident, he was released by M-1 Global.
"Alexander constantly violated the terms of contact, we canceled," said Vadim Finklestein. "Now he is a free agent, he has his own way. Neither I, Fedor, nor M-1 is responsible for his actions."
And shortly after that, he retired.
Now he is living in a monastery in Mount Athos, Greece.

What exactly is his story? He went to prison for armed robbery or some shit, didn't he?
I remember someone trying to talk about his tattoos and whether they actually meant anything, but I never cared enough to read more.
Is he some sort of low level Russian gangster or something? He's kind of an odd duck either way, no?

Looks like a nice life other than the notable lack of ladies.

He's just one of those crazy guys who doesn't know what to do with himself. Some of us may know the feeling. Hopefully he will find peace.

the monastery thing is cool too, tho. i'm waiting for the segal like insanity when greece's civil unrest has rioters trying to steal alexi's bread.

I have no clue what to do with myself. I'm not headed to a Greek monastery though.
Doesn't/didn't he have a family of his own?
