KATMANDU, Nepal — An 80-year-old Japanese man who began the year with his fourth heart operation became the oldest conqueror of Mount Everest on Thursday, a feat he called "the world's best feeling" even with an 81-year-old Nepalese climber not far behind him.

Yuichiro Miura, a former extreme skier who also climbed the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) peak when he was 70 and 75, reached the summit at 9:05 a.m. local time, according to a Nepalese mountaineering official and Miura's Tokyo-based support team.

He also became the first person to ski on Mount Everest on May 6, 1970. He descended nearly 4,200 vertical feet from the South Col (elevation over 8,000 m (26,000 ft)). This feat was documented in 1975, in the film The Man Who Skied Down Everest. The film won the Academy Award for best documentary, the first sports film to do so.

He's the oldest to summit, for now. There is another man, an 81 year old Nepalese, behind in another group. They'll make their summit bid soon.

Well, I started to fade at 18,000 feet last October. Wasn't absolutely sure I had another 11,000 feet in me. But, well, if Andy is going to short rope me and drag me up the hill, it should be a piece of cake.

The way records are broken after the first time, you might have to be in your 90s. I'll be over 100 and too tired to pull you up. You'll have to go it alone.
