ACL Tear - Pros/cons of surgery?

Just got results from an MRI, tore the ACL in my right knee. Anybody have first hand experience worth sharing? I know knee surgery was a bitch 10+ years ago, but I'd heard there have been some significant advancements. I hate the knife, but can't really fathom spending the next however many years without an ACL.
Any advise or experiences would be appreciated.

Total.
Also says this which could just as easily have been written in chinese.
Signal change along the free edge of the midbody of medial meniscus, fibrillation vs minor free edge tear.
WTF that means is beyond me. Have an appt. with the surgeon on Wed. to discuss options.
