Navy Yard Mass Murderer a "Tea Party" member...

...Oh, wait. No.
It will get little-to-no play with the big alphabet media.
Tuesday, on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper," Michael Ritrovato spoke at length about his friend, suspected Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis. After expressing his condolences to the victims and their families, Ritrovato then expressed his shock over the actions of a man he described as being "like a brother to me" and a "good-natured guy."
Ritrovato went on to explain that two of them had a close relationship based in part on their differences, specifically race and politics. Alexis was black, Ritrovato is white. Ritrovato described himself as conservative and
Alexis is "more of a liberal type" who supported Barack Obama:
I would say things like, 'You know, you are my brother from another mother.' And he would say things like, 'You're my Italian mafia guy from New York.' So we had things we joked about: Aaron wasn't conservative like I am.
He was more of a liberal type; he wasn't happy with the former [Bush] administration. He was more happy with this [the Obama] administration -- as far as presidential administrations.

I don't think the meds he must have been on will get much attention either, yet it seems like they are the yin to the gun's yang in almost all of these mass killings.

The US is years away from being able to discuss the implications of meds in incidents like this.
Did the guy play violent video games or listen to classical music?

Obama said, "If I had a son, he would look like Aaron."

You're so right johno. That damning descriptor 'more of a liberal type' should precede any and all media discussions of this mass murderer.

Mental health is primarily a state issue, and state budgets are way too tight to go back to higher levels of funding; the feds are unlikely to provide much funding. The VA is not set up to deal with it aggressively either. Ken Kesey's pernicious legacy lives strong.

Turnabout is fair play when the media have felt free to hallucinate Tea Party affiliations of previous mass murderers.

Damn. I hadn't followed the story at all but see how easy that is?
Figuring that I was missing something, I just clicked a few links. It seems that the shooter was a liberal, pro-Obama type on one page; an anti-government conspiracy nut on the other. He was black...and from Texas. He burned incense (LIBERAL!)...and carried a concealed weapon. He had lived in New York...and was a veteran.
There should be enough spin on this story to keep it in the news for a good three weeks before nothing is done.

The treatment of the mentally ill, or lack thereof, in the US is a crime. While both sides "debate" gun control with all the subtlety of chimps on crack, the mentally ill remain mistreated, maltreated, or ignored.

I've never really understood that.
In the US, you can openly talk of medicines you are talking for lifestyle-related diseases (i.e. high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes), can have somebody hand you some kind of extra-strength pain reliever or antacid in any office and have commercials for impotence on TV...but nobody can even talk of equivalent treatments related to mental health.

In the US being mentally ill = being homeless = being a loser.

Because Fox, CNN, NBC and the rest are owned by conglomerates with interest in these anti depressants and other shit drugs. The majority of these mass shooting assholes of the last 20 years have been on this shit.
Nutty kids on this kind of shit and the packs of 80IQ baboons, white trash shit bags and morons who want to live a scene out of American, is why we have so much violence with guns, not guns themselves.
Make the guns disappear and it's Hammer Time! for these types. Sure some might not kill when they have to work at it more, but many still would, probably use fire more.

Correlation, causation, etc..
Crazy people commit mass shootings; crazy people tend to be the ones on anti-psychotics and anti-depressants. One does not necessarily proceed from the second.

Over 98% of Americans say they'd rather be shot dead than lose the God-given right to bear arms.

It's a Scylla/Charybdis of NRA/ACLU. One advocates for the armed citizen, the other advocates for full citizen's rights for the insane.
Options:
A - Treat all citizens as if they were dangerously insane and disarm them.
B - Dis-able the dangerously insane.
I vote B.

Seems like a first step towards reasonable gun control would be that someone with a schizophrenic breakdown should lose their gun rights for and indeterminate time with a clear process of redress.
I may be completely wrong, but I think the NRA could get behind this, but the Feinstein/Bloomberg/Cuomo connection would rather just grab guns.

When it comes to mental illness, there really is a clash of visions. A dear friend has a son who's mentally ill. She, unfortunately, lives in the state of WA. In the fine state of WA, a child may refuse to take medication prescribed by a board certified psychiatrist at the ripe age of 13. He can't vote, he can't drink, he can't do much of anything as a minor. Yet, he's deemed capable of making such decisions on his own. Trouble is that he's knocked the shit out of her many times, and arrested a few times more, up to and including a felony domestic assault charge. Yet, he may still choose not to take his meds and, as a minor, does not see much in the way of punishment for the convictions. As a matter of fact, he's released back to her, into the same house, where he is a repeat offender, at will. The state support is in the form of social workers, the state social worker being the dumbest and most incompetent form of life known to man, who make very sure that he, the convicted felon, is never hurt by her. They investigate with vigor any of the tens of proven false claims made by him against her about him being beaten. So she fears defending herself. She's pre-emptive now about calling the police, who deride her about the innumerable calls. When he is arrested and convicted, his "punishment" has her carting him around to classes that have no foundation in proven efficacy, in the process making it extraordinarily difficult for her to hold a job.
If she crosses the border into OR everything changes. There, a child that behaves in such a way, with such violence, is placed into state paid residence care-where a battery of psychiatrists and psychologists said my friend's son should be. In WA, the only such help is available if the person is arrested and convicted, and the judge orders it. And, in OR, or a convicted violent offender 13 year old does not get to decide if he chooses to take his meds or not.

I agree. Anyone on psychotropic drugs should not be allowed to own/operate a firearm
