The Holidays

The holiday season is upon us and already the unrealistic expectations and guilt trips are pouring in.
I want a holiday focused on immediate family only vice two months focused on reassembling people who don't maintain contact throughout the year for a reason and then wondering why a bunch of dysfunction, when put into the same house for extended periods and combined with alcohol inevitably erupts in a volcano of rage.

I always tried to work on Christmas Day when I was in "those years". Standing watch or deployed in the military, or at a restaurant or one year ski bumming with a job as a snow maker in Vermont. It's the best day to work, everybody is in good cheer generally. Get the present opening done and move on. It has become a habit. Now i go ski patrol. Kids ski with me.
Volunteer somewhere. Go do something. Perfect good reason to not sit around.

We celebrate Hogswatch. It's much easier.

Frank Costanza got it right with Festivus: Airing of the Grievances and Feats of Strength.

I get to work Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. After a couple years of that, I'm paying a chinaman $100 to work my thanksgiving shift this year.
I love those psychos that raised me a lot more than I ever thought I would.

I found the holidays improved dramatically after we had the baby. Having custody of the sole grandbaby meant we could simply declare that the holidays would now be at our house and there would be no more driving to two sets of dinners at different parents. Grandbaby=ULTIMATE POWER.

I won't watch my nieces and nephews so my BILs and SILs can get drunk and watch tv all day. This makes me a bad uncle apparently.
At my old house I'd have to hide the good beer and stock up on PBR and Miller Lite

This is me with my cousins. One of them acts like she's doing me a favor since I don't have kids.
I remedied that by making a habit of getting absolutely obliterated at each family gathering. They always get upset and leave early, which is kind of my goal.

We don't do big family get togethers.
I eat and nap. Fuck interaction.

Irish gypsy tradition, most of us are in jail or dead so I just call the few that I like while I'm at my inlaws enjoying the apple pie eating/leave to beaver life that they have.

Girlfriend and I went to Waffle House on Christmas Eve after the usual drinks with friends last year. It was a Tom Waits song come to life in there, aged strippers and one-eyed homeless dwarves and shit, I want to make it a tradition.
Other tradition I can't get people to sign on for - Christmas Eve strip club trip, everyone dressed up like Nativity characters. Fuckin' strip clubs still have a $20 cover on Christmas Eve, not worth it for a joke.
