Life Before Death
This sombre series of portraits taken of people before and after they had died is a challenging and poignant study. The work by German photographer Walter Schels and his partner Beate Lakotta, who recorded interviews with the subjects in their final days, reveals much about dying - and living. Life Before Death is at the Wellcome Collection from April 9-May 18

Thanks for posting that, I actually read them all. It's pretty intense, but somehow I think it is important to contemplate death.

I appreciated that.
I think it was about when I hit 40 that I started thinking more about death (and not wanting to die just yet). It has been on my mind recently since I picked up a MRSA infection (not a big deal at my age but could be something that could kill me in just a few more years). I can't quite conceive of knowing I was going to die soon in the way that folks in a hospice do (my grandmother spent a while in one). Sobering stuff.

Some of these people look better in their "after" photos. Which, in some ways, makes sense.

It starts around age 40. Most people just don't want to think about it. It's the reason people don't want to be around old people. We remind them that they are going to die.

The reason I don't like being around old people is because they smell like vinegar.

And they don't like being around you because you're a gook.
