My dog just turned 18 on the 4th of July.

This one hit home a bit harder than I expected it to.

Almost as hard as this video did a while back:

We "inherited" a sweet old gray tomcat, Calvin, from my wife's grandmother a few years ago. We didn't know how old Calvin was, but he was probably at least thirteen or fourteen when he died. For most of the time that we had him, he was basically a big fat affectionate lump.

In September or October of 2012, he started having what looked to be mild seizures. Then, in December of that year, he pretty much stopped eating, stopped drinking, and stopped urinating. His kidneys were failing. His eyes turned yellow, and he started to smell like ammonia. He also stopped showing any interest in being around humans, or receiving any affection, so we pretty much knew his time was up.

We had a vet come euthanize him at home. We made him as comfortable as possible, and sat and talked to him while the vet came. The vet sedated him, and when he was out, euthanized him. The entire process took about ten minutes.

I can't pretend to know what the experience was like for Calvin. I think he was probably so far gone at that point that he wasn't really aware of what was going on around him. But I hope that, even at the end, he was able to register that we were trying to treat him kindly.

Had to put down my cat Lilly, whom I did not get shots for, she was only 2, and some kind of sickness swept through my cats. My old tom, Petey, left the house shortly afterwards and never came back. He was 14 or so, but I think he caught it too, and just left the house to die.

My queen, Lilly's mother, required an overnight stay and an IV to survive.

Moral of the story: Only vaccinate the cats you want to keep.

Last year my 13 year old cat went into kidney failure and was fading fast. My son asked that we didn't have her put down until he could see her one last time. He came home from school and she hung on through the weekend with him. She slipped into a coma on the way to the vet to be euthanized. The vet put her to sleep and we left her remains there to be cremated. This was on August 5th.

I spent some time with the vet asking about what signs I should look for in my 12 year old bulldog to recognize when her time was near. At that point she was deaf, almost blind and had bad arthritis. The discussion was moot as the next day, August 6th, our bulldog collapsed and just simply expired in my wife's arms. We brought her remains to the vet to await cremation.

Although I try to keep things in perspective, they both had relatively long pampered lives, it is heartbreaking to know that there are only 2 animals at the vet's office waiting for cremation and they're both yours.

Dog owners make me laugh. Sleeping on your beds when they are cute little puppies are fine but when they get a bit slow you "put them to sleep". Would it be fine to kill your grandmother if you took her bowling and to Starbucks before you put her down?

We spoiled the shit out of Remington anyway, but when we found out she had cancer that had metasticised, all bets were off. Homemade beef stew for dinner. Pizza crust. Ice cream. Playtime any time she wanted it... Loooong thoughtful walks.

They gave her three months. That dog lived another year and a half after that, and she was happy every day until the end.

I loved that dog so much. I still do, PBUH.

I had a cat who turned 17. Her kidneys failed. She was foaming at the mouth. It was 2 in the morning. No vet.

I couldn't leave her to die alone in pain. I had nothing left to give her but an easy exit.

I shot her myself. It is possible to shoot straight while you're sobbing like a baby.

I don't want to go through that again. Ever.
