Every so often I hear about Pennsic and the SCA.

What the fuck is this stuff? People who dress up like at the Ren Fair and beat the hell out of each other with sticks? Or is there more to it?

It's been going on for years. I had a buddy who was in the SCA in the early 90s and never missed the event.

They battle all day and then party like mad all night and then do it again.

Lot of tweakers though, I find them annoying as fuck.

Goddamn, I've partied hard at Ren Fairs after hours.

So it's like a small mini-society which hangs out together and parties and stuff. Gotcha.

Seems pretty good, except for the tweakers. I dislike tweakers.

Dr. A, think of it as Burning Man for history nerds, but with the event having grown so large that they are joined by Fantasy and Renn Faire people as well. Attendance is 12 to 14 thousand campers usually. It's 2 weeks long. My bellydance troupe goes every year, it's a major bellydancer vacation nexus, they come from all over the USA to party and socialize.

The drug of choice at Pennsic is alcohol, in massive quantities. There is some pot use, but no more than I see in everyday life. Security will toss you out for illegal drugs.

Because half the guys I have known who do SCA are also Tweakers.

In 90, when I first heard of SCA through one of them and I told another friend I was interested in it, he said " Lot of speedfreaks and cokeheads." before anything else.

But it has been a few years since I've seen anyone from SCA.

Weird. Maybe that was the local guys you knew, because I have never seen that kind of drug use anywhere in the SCA that I've been in 25 years of traveling from in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Pa.

Same, though I'm not active anymore and don't have the years you do. The worst I've seen at any SCA event is booze, weed, and maybe some pills. Fun times to be had as long as the assholes who take the shit WAY too seriously don't come rain on your parade.
