Thanks Spells. that was fascinating.
"Solitude did increase my perception. But here's the tricky thing—when I applied my increased perception to myself, I lost my identity. With no audience, no one to perform for, I was just there. There was no need to define myself; I became irrelevant. The moon was the minute hand, the seasons the hour hand. I didn't even have a name. I never felt lonely. To put it romantically: I was completely free."

I probably should question why I am currently envious of the guy.

I know he broke the law and should pay but I can't help but think the best thing to do is just give the guy some gear, suplies and a regular place to come get food and let him go live in the woods.

Agreed.
Also agreed - and that would be cheaper than incarcerating him.

Certainly he doesn't deserve to be behind bars but will never really function in society. Some place has to exist for him to live.

I hope that the people he stole from refuse to press charges at least.

His skin was strangely pale; his glasses, with chunky plastic frames, were extremely outdated. But he wore a nice Columbia jacket, new Lands' End blue jeans, and sturdy boots.
So just another NYU grad on the way from his gig as a Barista to crush a workout at the local box?

He did. He just bypassed the Federal Government collection agency.

LOL at the resident Hard cases that want to give this guy a big fat wet kiss of a pass. If this turds name was Tyrone and he was black they'd be calling for the locals to string his ass up.

Theft is theft; no matter how well intentioned you are or what dopey romantic notions about nature you have bouncing around in your head.

You missed the part where I said " I know he broke the law and should pay"?

I would have also blown his brains all over the wall if he broke in my home if I was there. White, Brown,Black or purple. Believe me, I don't think you should have to figure out someone's intent if they brake into your home, I think their life should belong to you at that point. Your castle, their ass!

But I also have a visceral reaction that this guy is not much of a threat to anyone and after his jail time is served I don't see him adapting into society, so yes if I was Thugutator I'd decree he'd be giving gear and supplies and sent back to the woods with a warring that he'd be executed if he ever was caught stealing again.

Yes, the only problem I do have with him is the B and E and robbery, other than that he is doing exactly what I've said I would do if truly homeless and what I think should be done with many of the homeless, dropped into remote areas to live off the land. I'd much rather eat squirrels, rabbits and deer, along with roots and wild veggies than dive into a dumpster or beg for change.

Seems to me's guilty of one count of B&E and petty theft, and then maybe only if the business presses charges (which they might not). The rest he most likely copped to without the benefit of a lawyer to inform him of his rights (assuming he was read his rights). I think we have a whole thread about when that happens.

I'm guessing that any public defender can get him out of any charges other than the break in he was caught for.

Is there some law that I'm not aware of that says counsel must be present in order to confess to a crime?

You guessed wrong, and I guess you didn't read the whole article.

On October 28, 2013, Chris appeared in Kennebec County Superior Court and pleaded guilty to thirteen counts of burglary and theft. He was sentenced to seven months in jail—he'd already served all but a week of this, waiting for his case to be resolved. The sentence was far more lenient than it could have been, though even the prosecutor said a long prison term seemed cruel in this case. Chris was ordered to meet with a judge every Monday, and avoid alcohol, and either find a job or go to school. If he violated these terms, he could be sent to prison for seven years.

Apparently I forgot about that part. Apparently the public defender is pretty weak.
