European robot probe Philae has made the first, historic landing on a comet, after descending from its mothership. The landing on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko was confirmed at about 1605 GMT.

My son and I have been following the whole thing very closely since Rosetta made synchronous orbit months ago. SO COOL. A successful journey of 6.4 billion kilometers, around the sun, out past Saturn to rendezvous with a comet and then land on it. Consider that we were riding around on horses ~100 years ago and basque in the brilliance of this achievement.

When do they explode the nukes?
Edit: this is the best site to track what is going on.

This event has made me very happy. In a thousand years, when nobody gives a fuck anymore about ISIS, Ukraine, mid-term elections, Syria, or any of us this day will still be remembered.

Until this boondoggle yields something as equally useful as velcro, nobody cares.

Velcro is not a spin-off of any kind of space exploration, and this mission is costing the Europeans about 1/100th what the Apollo program cost America.
On the other hand, the Philae lander will probably never punch a guy who believes its mission was a hoax.

In typical stupid human fashion, there seems to be some sort of uproar over the shirt that was worn by one of the mission directors during a mission briefing.

Criticizing a nerd for his attire is culturally insensitive.

I've watched every season/episode of "Ink Master" therefore:
1. Sketchy uneven line work with uneven saturation.
2. Poor lettering...too much distance between the "R" and the "O."
3. Poor shading creates a lack of depth and perspective.
4. Overall poor design that has so much black pigmentation it cannot be fixed.
This person would be told, "You do not have what it takes to be ink master. Please pack up your machines and close shop."

That's so cool. How would you assess the following?

Sadly, the brouhaha over Taylor’s shirt overshadowed not only his accomplishments but also those of his female teammates, including one of the project’s lead researchers, Kathrin Allweg of the University of Bern in Switzerland. More spotlight on Allweg, Grady, Alexander and the other remarkable women of the Rosetta project would have been a true inspiration to girls thinking of a career in science. The message of ShirtStorm, meanwhile, is that aspiring female scientists can be undone by some sexy pictures on a shirt—and that women’s presence in science requires men to walk on eggshells, curb any goofy humor that may offend the sensitive and be cowed into repentance for any misstep.

Just saw the "debate" about this. ANY private sector employee of a large organization gets fired.

I was joking, but it looks like some are seriously defending this guy on the grounds that he probably didn't know any better. That's ridiculous. Even if he didn't know better, there had to be someone around him who would know that going on the news in that shirt was a bad idea.
