They are going to be able to cram 1.5m people on that beach as well.

Can't have that in America. It would be nice for about six weeks, and then the local Section 8 cheats would start dropping their kids off for free babysitting. Graffiti, flash mobs, gunfire, #blacklivesmatter brunch singers, and sneaker riots would ensue.

Good for the chinks.

Africans love their malls. I visited the mall in Nairobi that the Al Shabab terrorists attacked. Was a nice place. South Africa has a bunch of nice ones.

The malls in our area all died out too as more and more "teens" arrived.

If you visit the deadmalls.com site, a bunch of them essentially closed for that reason. People no longer felt safe.

To flip that around, one of the reasons why malls in South Africa are so popular are they are islands of safety. The Nairobi mall actually had metal detectors at the entrances and no photography was allowed.

You should be a tour guide, nafod. I'm enjoying your stories about travel destinations.

China built the previous largest shopping mall in the world and it didn't exactly work.

It's a bit better now but nothing like it was supposed to be.

Chongqing is a better location but still a bit of a shithole - the value of this building was in the people it made money for already.

Carson Block and Jim Chanos each called the underlying dynamics and coming crash years ago but they just didn't appreciate how god damn big the bubble could get...

I don't know anybody paying attention who didn't call it.

The Chinese gov't is currently tripping over themselves to get their companies involved in infrastructure projects outside of the country to keep things rolling as there aren't as many opportunities as there used to be domestically.

I was in a ten-tier town in western China a few months ago and could see perhaps a dozen construction cranes. They said the idea was to develop luxury high-rise apartments so people from the coastal cities would move in and develop the city. They've been pushing this idea for the past five or six years and the migration has yet to occur.

You are going to see more projects like the Nicaragua Canal being built in backwater places in Africa and Eastern Europe and South America in the next decade as China "helps them improve infrastructure". If you see a plan to built the largest airport in the world in some place like the Sudan you can be sure that a Chinese developer is behind it.

I've heard there are upwards of 65-75 million empty apartments in China.

I'm going to pretend you are serious.

So one of the more bizarre "malls" I've been to is the international airport in Dubai. Flew there from Addis Ababa on the way to somewhere else, with a layover from midnight to 4:00 AM. It was the Land of Not Quite Right, a cross between the bar from Star Wars, the USO show in the jungle in Apocalypse Now, and the Galleria in your suburbs. The crossroads of 3rd world terrorists, folks going on the Haj, Chinese with cameras, Kuwaitis with their slave Pakistanis in tow, etc. Filled with stores that were as busy as Black Friday in the Galleria too. Going elbow to elbow with some Nigerian fighting over the last copy of Entertainment Weekly. Listening to chill music in their Chico's but by chill music I mean chilling, like what Arabs chant before they cut your head off.

By the way Emirates Stewardesses are the hottest. Oh-yeah.

You knew exactly what I was talking about, though.

I almost said, "like the Paris metro during Ramadan"
