Nothing less than platitudes from Josh Earnest will do at a time of crisis like this.
Let us hope that they're quickly forthcoming to forestall fear in the American people and our allies worldwide.

What a year for the historians this will be. At least it's instability someplace the US never occupied.

Isn't Turkey's military known for being one of the more professional and secular in that region?
The Turkish military has traditionally seen itself as a guardian of the country’s secular heritage, and tensions between Erdogan and the Turkish armed forces have been growing for years.

I think this tradition of a secular military goes back to the immediately post Ataturk days but I could have that totally wrong.

A secular Turkey isn't a bad thing.

No. When I was in Istanbul a few years back it was a cool place to visit...only after that did some of the islamicism get out of hand

I was in Istanbul earlier this year-- the day before the bombing that killed the German tourists and again a few days after. Pretty much stayed in the tourist areas but other than a few more cops and less homeless in the airport there was no difference. The few Kurds I met were wary but seemed pretty well tolerated.

I like goats in a non sexual platonic way,but then I am not a turk or arab....they don`t seem to be able to leave the poor goats alone.

I was in Izmir in 1989, when our ship pulled in for a port visit. On the pier coming back to the ship, I bought a velvet painting of an 18 wheeler crossing the desert with a ghost image of a pony express rider in the background, for $1.

CNN is reporting the coup plotters were being advised by an American, supposedly identified as a former
US Army Ranger of Hispanic descent.

Istanbul was/is a sex tourism destination for 50+ year old white women. Because they could get all the action they wanted there.
