Parameters:
1) Relatively low cost of entry
2) Can bring in enough money to make it worth your while......whatever that is.
On the high end I can see something like Dough Boy's type of franchise I takes $200K-$300K start up a Batteries + Bulbs biz but you get help from the franchising company.
On the low end something like a traveling knife sharpening gig as mentioned in the hobbies thread has to be real cheap and easy enough to figure out.
At the lowest end, just take your car and become an Uber driver.
There's got to be a million things.

Get a taco truck, although there's a risk there will be one on every corner.

Very often this is much less about picking the "what" and more about "how do I get paid." People make bank walking groups of dogs.

Look to make passive income via internet-based opportunities.
Which I suppose brings us full-circle back to man-whoring.....

I would like to find something but working overtime seems like the best use of my time. At one point I did a really shitty job of selling atlas stones and calculated the maximum potential profit at $17 an hour. When I got a job that paid more than that I was completely done with that venture.

Yes, and often cash. But the IRS has gotten wise and is gunning for them.

They did so 20 years ago....when they went after Manhattan hotel doormen/bellmen.

The recruiter in me is compelled to throw out a different perspective: remote work. I have had the very good fortune to work remote pretty much exclusively, for years now. The cost savings of dialing trips into the office are dramatic. I realize not everyone can pull this off for all roles, but it's out there.
OTOH, if the side gig is small enough, and/or you can grow it slowly (as you'll need to grow into it as you maintain what you do for real work), then it's probably a good option too. Stating the obvious, I know.

My uncle has a part time gig recycling (mostly metal). He drives around in an old truck, makes a few bucks, and spends most of his time BSing. He's been doing it for nearly 20 years, and likes it more than any of the professional jobs he's had. He's 82 now.

Interesting. That's when they started coming after us, too. I guess the woman who told me about this was new-ish and thought she could get away with something.

I'd think setting up household computer and network systems, with maybe remote admin, could be a nice little side gig? Not to mention home entertainment systems.
