I bought one of these little farkles in lieu of the way assspensive "title" boxing timers. Don't get me wrong, it's cheaply made. but it's cost lest than a watch with similar functions.

Easy set up, for work and rest periods, like a boxing timer. Has vibe mode so you don't disturb the peace whilst doing pilates intervals or whatever.
Super good for sprint intervals, tabatas if you roll that way. I use mine for timed KB work. I suppose it would work for the EDT types as well. Best Jackson I've spent on gym toys in a long time.

I have had one for about 6 or 8 months and its held up fine. Use it for tabata's on my airdyne and all heavy bag work. Used it a few times for density drills. Good deal.

Hagbard,
Glad to hear you like it. It's worked out good for me, nineteen bucks well spent.

Well,
They stand behind their product. The boss started malfunctioning sometimes, I emailed them, told them what was happening, and two days later had a brand new one in my mail box.

I got one a couple of months ago. The ten second alarm didn't work, NBD. A few weeks later it was completely dead, new battery and nothing - no go. Called up and left a message. That evening Gary called back and left a message. I got a hold of him the next morning, he said he would send another one out the folowing business day with postage to return the original. He said batteries should last a year, and he likes to get the malfunctioning gymbosses back to see if they can figure out what's happening.
Great little timer for intervals, tabata, timing work periods, rest periods, boiled eggs, etc. with even better customer service.

I resisted paying $20 for a timer(!!!) for a long time, but I finally realized that with my not-so-hot sense of time during standing med and baduanjin, and because the gym has about 1 place where I can stand and watch the clock during KB intervals and some mullet is usually doing flyes in it, I needed to cough up and get one.
Nice little timer. It's at least as sturdily-made as your basic $5 kitchen timer, and can do the following:
Selectable for 1 or 2 intervals, so you can do tabata: 20 sec on, 10 sec off, repeat. Each interval is programmable from 00:00 to 99:59 by 1 second increments. More than any sane person needs, in other words.
You can have it time intervals forever, or for a preset # of them.
It can also do a single countdown and then quit, like a basic egg timer.
The alarm can be 1, 5, or 10 seconds long, and can be high (loud), low, vibrate, or high or low plus vibrate.
Overall it's obvious that a lot of thought went into what would make it useful for exercise specifically and these features put it way above a kitchen timer.
So far I have used it for baduanjin (in the AM I find that I am sometimes worrying about time, and that pressure is not conducive to the proper state of mind.) With this I just look at how much time I have, divide it by 8, and set the interval for that. Then I do each "Brocade" and when it beeps I move on to the next one. 20 min of baduanjin is a bitch, BTW.
I am also using it for standing med from "The Way of Energy." Same thing: I am doing the book's series of postures now, so I just set the interval and hold each one for the time. Beep. Change.
Oh, it takes a standard AAA and it's easy to change. If something goes wrong I'll let you know how it resolves but so far it's well worth the bucks.

GDG, you didn't try to just make one yourself? That's weird.
I've been meaningto get one of these timers as everyone raves about them.

Ironically, I was teaching my boy about breadboards this last week, and at the science museum's engineering show this weekend we ended up putting together a little 555 timer circuit.
Building a Gymboss would be a colossal PITA, however.

Gym Boss is a great product. Being an anal retentive GS player from time to time, I wish you could program fractions of a second. That way you could do reps/min sets that do not evenly divide (ie 9/min, 13/min, etc.).
One of the joys of using the Gym Boss with handlebells is that you can forget about counting and kinda turn the thing into a meditation practice, especially on those 20 minute sets.

I've had one for about 3 months. I'll agree, best double-sawbuck on gym equipment ever spent. And, yes, don't forget the free T-shirt offer.
Rant passed on his and he pimped the GB long ago.

It's still going strong and still kicks much ass. Very helpful.
The only thing it doesn't do is count up like a standard timer so that you can see how long a circuit or whatever is taking you. But that isn't a problem for anyone who knows how to subtract.

In addition to working great normally, I thought it was interesting that this morning when I accidentally knocked the Gymboss off my waist taking off the X-Vest and the battery came out, that the Gymboss kept counting regularly for the 5 or so seconds it took me to pick up the battery and re-insert it. The Gymboss is truly a many-splendored fitness product.
