Ah. This was tried in the US for a long time in Bo Lozoff's Prison Ashram project. (His book is called "We're All Doing Time). The results were good apparently, and recently he also branched out into a biodiesel project, to be manned by former inmates.
His local outreach house closed down due to allegations of sexual misconduct, which is too bad.
