Red Cliffs

Not usually into the Chinese epic films, but this was good. The symbolism was well done (understandable to western audiences), and not a lot of ridiculous wire work during the action sequences.

There is the Chinese version (with subtitles), in two parts, that is about five hours long (over two hours each). The American version is about three hours long. I recommend the Chinese version-- as I understand it, the American version leaves a lot of good parts out. Good acting, nice battle sequences (a little ridiculous, but they are in most epic movies), and well written.

The movie made me want to read the books it is based on.

Good stuff. Part 2 got a little too melodramatic for my taste but that's oh so typical of chinese stuff. they can't resist the urge to get cute or emotional. the battle scenes were pretty well done.

I hated these films. Battle of Wits was much better for a comparable film, as was The Warlords. An hour into Red Cliff 1 I just didn't give a fuck anymore.

the first Red cliff was just a big set up for the second one with the battle and all. But it had this annoying part about a cute little kid and a friendship between a main spy and the sympathetic enemy. So if you hated the first one, you really would have hated the second.

Agreed on Warlords. Battle of the Warlords was still the best chinese flick i've seen in a long time.
