I'm in the mood to watch some war movies. I was thinking of Guns of Navarone, which I haven't seen since I was 10. What's in your top 5? Bridge too far? What else?

This one is not quite as epic as its cast would suggest, but it still deserves to be remembered.

Lot's good ones already mentioned. Expand just a little bit and try two from WW1. Try "The Blue Max" and an absolutely great Kubrick movie, "Paths of Glory."

Not a "war movie" compared to the others, but I always thought 'From Here to Eternity' was a great flick. Burt Lancaster's fucking great in it...so is Sinatra.

Excellent. Thanks all.

Great Escape-I watch that minimum once every two years. About time to introduce my son to it.

I still have occasional nightmares over my first viewing of that. Jesus Christ I think I would have volunteered to storm a beach before hopping in one of those little cans.

And all of this reminds me-thank you to everyone who served.

You didn't say the movies were supposed to make you happy.

Same here. It's one of the most thoroughly enjoyable movies ever made.

Stalag 17 is a great movie as well and if you really love the Great Escape it's definitely worth watching. I've seen all the versions of Das Boot...subtitled, dubbed etc. Great movie. I concur with the recommendation of "From Here to Eternity" and would also recommend "The Professionals" with Lee Marvin, Bert Lancaster, and Woody Strode. It's one of my all-time favorites.

Last night my 8 year old and I watched Frank Capra's 1944 Doc "Know Your Enemy- The Japanese", another 1944 Doc on the D-Day to Berlin narrated by Eisonhower and multiple American, Brit, Canadian and French perticapents and a 1941 Doc about a Brit Wellongton Bomber crew.

We are such shitbags compared to that generation. a Pop. of 175,000,000 put almost 20 million in uniform now a pop. of 300,000,000 does not even have 2 million.

Bobby, I've not heard of this...is it subtitled or dubbed?

Edit: I'm not seeing it on IMDB.

Edit 2: Did find it on IMDB...different cover art.
