Cost of college education should plummet...

Post by johno »

...and a first-rate educational opportunity be available to the 99%.

Come the Revolution
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

Andrew Ng is an associate professor of computer science at Stanford, and he has a rather charming way of explaining how the new interactive online education company that he cofounded, Coursera, hopes to revolutionize higher education by allowing students from all over the world to not only hear his lectures, but to do homework assignments, be graded, receive a certificate for completing the course and use that to get a better job or gain admission to a better school.

“I normally teach 400 students,” Ng explained, but last semester he taught 100,000 in an online course on machine learning. “To reach that many students before,” he said, “I would have had to teach my normal Stanford class for 250 years.”

Welcome to the college education revolution. Big breakthroughs happen when what is suddenly possible meets what is desperately necessary. The costs of getting a college degree have been rising faster than those of health care, so the need to provide low-cost, quality higher education is more acute than ever. At the same time, in a knowledge economy, getting a higher-education degree is more vital than ever. And thanks to the spread of high-speed wireless technology, high-speed Internet, smartphones, Facebook, the cloud and tablet computers, the world has gone from connected to hyperconnected in just seven years. Finally, a generation that has grown up on these technologies is increasingly comfortable learning and interacting with professors through online platforms.

The combination of all these factors gave birth to Coursera.org, which launched on April 18, with the backing of Silicon Valley venture funds, as my colleague John Markoff first reported.
...
“The universities produce and own the content, and we are the platform that hosts and streams it,” explained Daphne Koller, a Stanford computer science professor who founded Coursera with Ng after seeing tens of thousands of students following their free Stanford lectures online. “We will also be working with employers to connect students — only with their consent — with job opportunities that are appropriate to their newly acquired skills. So, for instance, a biomedical company looking for someone with programming and computational biology skills might ask us for students who did well in our courses on cloud computing and genomics. It is great for employers and employees — and it enables someone with a less traditional education to get the credentials to open up these opportunities.”
...
These top-quality learning platforms could enable budget-strained community colleges in America to “flip” their classrooms. That is, download the world’s best lecturers on any subject and let their own professors concentrate on working face-to-face with students. Says Koller: “It will allow people who lack access to world-class learning — because of financial, geographic or time constraints — to have an opportunity to make a better life for themselves and their families.”

When you consider how many problems around the world are attributable to the lack of education, that is very good news. Let the revolution begin.

Sounds nice, but if Freidman is pushing it, it's unlikely if it actually works as advertised.

Institutions from grade school on up have become bloated with bearucrats. Everyone looks at student:teacher ratio. Look at the trends in administrator:teacher ratio and I think you'll find a big problem.

It will be interesting to see how traditional universities respond to online stuff. MIT has been offering content for years. They just retooled and rebranded with MITx.

There is also Khan Academy, which has really good stuff.

When you watch things like Khan, and see the other things on docs like "Waiting for Superman," you realize that the problem with education is not having enough badass teachers like these.

I don't know how this will all play out, but I already signed up for a couple things. Looks good.

My stepdaughter (9th grade) uses Khan Academy in a big way. Loves it. She comes home, and anything her teacher introduced in a confusing way, she looks up the Khan Academy lecture on same.

Then she goes "See! My teacher is so stupid. Why couldn't she have explained it that way?!?" And gets straight As.

It's pretty amazing, really.

The value of a degree has been dropping for decades, so the price should as well.

I liked the old MIT online stuff - opencourseware. Was pretty dead-on useful, and all but one or two of the classes I took were available, so I can't image MITx is worse (haven't bothered to look, I'm done). It may never turn into a legitimate way to get a degree, but it's certainly a legitimate way to do some self-education if that's your thing.

Kahn's speaking at commencement, so hopefully that'll be somewhat interesting (although not looking forward to sitting through yet another graduation speech etc).

No, it hasn't. The returns to graduating with a C average in English lit might have fallen, but the average returns to a college degree has risen over the past few decades. Returns to education are the main driver of increasing inequality since the 1980s.

Has the value risen faster than the cost?

If you don't major in comparative religion, yes.

Is it that the returns of a college degree have risen in real terms, or is it that the returns of a college degree relative to a high school diploma have risen?

It's relative returns.

So colleges have raised tuition over a period when the real returns of an education are not rising.?

I tell people all the time that school is outdated, boring, and a breeding ground for social problems like drug use. I oughtta fucking know since I pumped drugs to their kids all the way through. But you might as well shit on their dinner table for how receptive most folks are. They cannot make the distinction between school and an education, which is available everywhere, all the time.

Relative returns drove the inequality increase. A college degree remains a very good investment, especially considering the subsidies it receives, as long as you don't major in comparative genitalia or take 6 years to not finish.

the attributes of success today are largely the same as in the day of our founding fathers. those attributes can be developed studying the classics, poetry, or radical feminism. what you study is less significant than how you study and the habits of mind and character you develop.

pinky teaches a social "science." using the term science to describe his discipline is a huge kindness. its practitioners routinely spout nonsense, according to other esteemed practitioners of said discipline. the chaos of his field doesn't make it a bad major, though. in fact, it's reasonably well-regarded as a major in some circles. right up there with, say, psychology, another social "science."

Got it. Your ignorance is due to how you studied, not what you studied.

Obviously chose a shit degree and/or sucks.

Supply and demand. It's not about what you want to major in. It's what the market is willing to pay for.

All the whiney twats are mad because the majority of them did what they wanted rather than what the market needed. And now they can't find a job. Tough luck.

Some are just genuinely screwed by location, declining industries, or some other factor(s). And that does suck. But for rest, well I'll just have to buy stock in Kleenex because there is a lot of crying going on.

You probably blame Madoff's victims instead of Madoff too. There is no legit reason for recent levels of college inflation.

Nuh-uh, Turdy, it is because of the union workers that staff campuses across the country.
