Makes the Gulag Archipelago look tame.
Depressing but worth the look.

I did same thing, but quit after half a dozen. What kind of sick bastard was this artist prison guard. Shows them all smiling enjoying inflicting pain.

It is exact time (i remember it) when started that anticommunist campaign, there was a lot of such shit on TV, in the books, articles, etc.
He was just inspired by that campaign.

There was an "anti-communist" campaign in the USSR during the Afghan War? Pravda, Bill?

Volume 2 of the Gulag Archipelago was worse than this.... cannibalism inside of the camps wasn't mention here. Volume 3 talked about rebellion against the camps and the system, including the Novocherkassk mass shootings by MVD troops. Stupid party bosses got people spun up, then the MVD shot into crowds. Stupid.

I had friends from over there. They liked the system. Said that the terror was "old news" but they were still afraid to buck the system.

There was 26 dead. It is bad of course.

But after a couple of seconds of simple search.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watts_riots
34 deaths

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_Detroit_riot
The result was 43 dead, 1,189 injured, over 7,200 arrests

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_Newark_riots
26 dead and hundreds injured

Bill, not trying to give you shit here but this is a direct copy and paste from Wiki:

The sheer volume of firsthand testimony and primary documentation that Solzhenitsyn managed to assemble in The Gulag Archipelago made all subsequent Soviet and KGB attempts to discredit the work useless. Much of the impact of the treatise stems from the closely detailed stories of interrogation routines, prison indignities and (especially in section 3) camp massacres and inhuman practices.

In an interview with German weekly Die Zeit British historian Orlando Figes asserted that many gulag inmates he interviewed for his research identified so strongly with the book's contents that they became unable to distinguish between their own experiences and what they read: "The Gulag Archipelago spoke for a whole nation and was the voice of all those who suffered".[7]

So are you saying he made it all up? Why?

Pravda means "truth". I'm not being sarcastic.

Russia welcomed Solzhenitsyn back after years with us, Bill. If he wrote lies why let him come home? If he slandered Russia why not make him stay in America?

I watch RT several times a week. I also will visit pravda.ru. Some of my colleagues visit Lenta.ru and will fill in the details. My Russki is still weak.

Our Liberals, Bill, said that the Soviet system had no violence and no envy. They believed that the USSR ended inequality so nobody wanted to commit crimes. Well, how did those idiotic Party bosses cause this mess? WHy did the MVD send in troops who shot people? How many "dissidents" were shot after the riots ended?

Our Media whines endlessly about riots. They wail about guns in private hands. They manufacture crime when there is no present. "Putin stole the election". "Putin stole the Presidency from Hillary".

Our biggest riots were in the 1860s. Draft riots in New York City. Over a thousand dead.

Why are you so defensive, Bill? The USSR isn't Russia. Russia existed for over a thousand years before that pederast VI Ulyanov decided to make a paradise on Earth, leaving it to the tender mercies of Koba the bankrobber.

Stalin purged his own party, including the founders of the USSR. He purged anyone who caused him worry. He purged his own generals. How Russia needed Tukhachevski when Hitler's SS showed up. Where was he? Dead.

Stalin killed Trotsky in Mexico. He had Kamenev and Zinoviev shot in the head in Lyubyanka. He ignored his own intelligence service who warned him of Hitler's schemes. When Hitler's legions crossed the Soviet borders Stalin ran to his dacha to sulk like a child. He mismanaged the war.

After the war he rewarded his generals by purging them. Who was left after that paranoid old man died on the floor bathed in his own piss? Khrushchev.

Khrushchev admitted Stalin's crimes in his speech. Solzhenitsyn didn't read that speech, Nikita Sergeyivich read it. Though he did not admit his participation in purges in Ukraine, did he?

Central planning, political correctness, wasteful spending on an empire which did not serve the Soviet people but served the ambitions of party bosses and the bureaucracy, endless excuses and lies. Didn't Russia suffer enough?

Markus Wolf of the DDR's external intelligence put it well in his memoirs - "We were too quick accept excuses".

The USSR ceased to exist on Dec 25 1991. Russia is still around, stronger than it was in Soviet times.

The Gulag Archipelago was released in English during the Brezhnev era. The movie "The Chekist" was from 1992. They were probably already working on it when the USSR was still in business.

To answer your question Sangoma, Russia's direct involvement in Afghanistan ended in 1989. They continued to support the communists Khalq for a while longer. More wealth squandered on an empire which was already dying.

We Americans were actually stupid enough to invade Afghanistan. Now it's our turn to spend ourselves into the poorhouse.

The Soviets accomplished a lot of cool things. If they had not goaded us the US would never have gone to the moon. New kinds of technology. New ways of doing things.

The Soviet system was not meant to last. It was supposed to fade away. Instead it grew ossified and procrustean... bureaucratic. Corrupt. Leaden.

Russia is better off today. For all of the shit that NATO is pulling on the borders Russia is growing more powerful. They are growing Soft Power.
