When I was a kid, growing up in the NoVA/DC Metro area, there were several things you had to have experienced in order to fit in with the other kids at school, and the shock-jock excellence that was The Greaseman was one of them.

My dad and I used to listen to him on the way to drop me off at school in the morning.

The Greaseman got a raw deal, if you ask me. He was also a DC Cop, that was his night job, and he lost *both* jobs after he commented "No wonder people drag them behind trucks." after he played that new Lauryn Hill song (this was shortly after James Byrd had been murdered).

My favorite is when the marine corps marching band goes to Vietnam and gets in a firefight. Machine guns and flugelhorns fill the air with music. The violinist strings his bow with his enemy's guts. Etc.

I heard that very show while on a construction site, none of the blacks their got pissed that day. His audience was mostly white. The behind the scenes is that Ronny Mervus, the diamond guy who was on of their biggest advertisers on Arrow 94.7 said he'd jerk his adds. This from a man who's family works them Kafers in the mines in Africa. His daughter dated a Skinhead buddy of mine.

I heard the Greaseman's first show on DC 101 as a kid. I used to go to the jobsites with my dad and his guys. I was at the Alexandria train station across from the Masonic Temple when he first came on. In 5 minutes he had the whole crew rolling and laughing their asses off. This was right after Stern left.

Dad took the whole crew and me to one of Grease's personal appearances when he was "Running for President" in 84. It was a fucking riot! About 600 people in a parking lot singing "Redneck" along with him.

I sometimes would tape his shows so I could play him for my other little fucked up buddies in Upstate NY, where I lived durring the school year. They ate that shit up because we had nothing even close there. I was nicknamed Sgt. Fury because I could do all the sketches.

I can't find a recording but this one sticks in my head because I have done it for years after hearing it.

" I was getting stressed at work, so the Bossman at DC 101 said "Grease, take the day off and go let out some steam."

" I don't know what to do?" I said. " Heck Grease Putt Putt Golf ( A miniature golf and arcade/go cart track) is one of our sponsors, go on down there and have a good time on us, I'll call ahead"

" Well I don't know anything about Golf, Boss?" " What's to know, it's miniature golf, just try it."

So I go down to Put Put, get some clubs and a ball and I start playing. Nothing is going right, not at the windmill, the crazy bridge, non of it. And then I see people pointing at me and laughing. Mocking me " Hey look at Grease, he can't even get it in the hole!"

The anger was growing in me, seething anger at being mocked by fat people and pimply teenagers at the arcade. Soon I was seeing red and then it happened!

My mind flashed back to Dak To, 1968 ( helicopter sounds) where the name on my uniform said Greasmaneli but everyone knew me as SGT.FURY! I flashed back to a village raid (the sound of dinks chatting, mixed with laughter)

I could not control myself any longer, this must end now! So I dropped my golf club. reached in my briefcase and pulled out MY UZI! AND I STARTED SPRAYING!!! ( Sounds of automatic fire) I took the retard picking up trash right in the belly with a burst! I cut a running woman in half with another! I was seeing targets left and right! Soon I was knee deep in spent ammunition! The Uzi burring hot in my hands as I switched mag after mag until I was out.

Then it was quiet, only a few moans could be heard as I surveyed the carnage. There were teenagers slumped over Pac Man machines, a fat man in a polyester suit was already attracting buzzards, a family of 4 was laying in pieces.

then the silence was broken by the sound of a phone by the concessions counter. I walked over and pushed a dead cashier out of the way and picked up the phone. It was the Bossman from DC 101 " Grease, is that you?"

"Yeah Boss" I said.

" I just wanted to call and see how you were doing?"

" F-Fine Boss."

" So, did you get a hole in one?"

"Well as a matter of fact Bossman, I GOT A HOLE IN THEM ALL!"

I do and I freely admit that both me, and Mr. Sr. Kenneth X The Second used to laugh our asses off over that. It was great, and frankly, we both thought there was a lot of light in his social commentary, no matter how crude he was at the time.

Here's my beef about Howard Stern--

I dislike Howard Stern. I always have. In my mind, he had a better intellect than the level he stoops to. I get how Andrew "Dice" Clay could joke about blow jobs and stuff, and make it funny. He was a charicature, and that charicature was legitimately funny -not genius, mind you but funny.

Howard Stern is smart enough to write better jokes than "Fartman," and he's smarter than bringing porn stars in and asking them to show him their tits in an effort to play up this charicature of his as a nerdy, Jewish poon-hound with a blue sense of humor.

The Greaseman was way better, because he said all the things that blue collar and white collar folks alike were always thinking, but never saying, and he put a lot of thought and intelligence into it, no matter how base or crude he came off.

That dude could always get a laugh out of me, no matter what.

Stern on DC 101 was awesome. He'd do great jokes, good banter, funny songs and fake commercials and then play rock and roll.

The whole not playing music so you have to talk more is IMO where Stern lost his magic. He frankly became a boring old jew from the tony burbs. He would drone on and on about mundane domestic shit. I hate those all talk shows like that. if I want talk radio, I listen to political, news and culture stuff. And yes, he was better than that but he was lazy and sure of his shit. His books had me fucking rolling.

When they had Stern on here again and then Grease came back, only assholes put it on Howard. Radio started to fucking die around here when he got axed. It's complete shit now.

Stern is bigger and will always be referenced more than the Greaseman but Greaseman was better. Shit Katty Perry has sold more records and is way more popular than PJ Harvey but PJ is a better artist.

Stern is McDonald's. Greaeman is Outback Steakhouse!
