Smart car negotiator guys, help...

Post by seeahill »

OK, I did my research and I want the new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Jeep is doing an early launch and the cars should be on dealers' lots in a month or two. The dealer says I can order one but they aren't sure of the pricing yet. How do I handle this?

I need to get a car because I have a job two days a week 120 miles away. My good car goes off lease in two months, so there is some urgency. My work truck couldn't handle the miles...

Oh yeah, and the Costco Auto Buying program doesn't have a "member's only" price for the 2014s either.

Show up with plenty of lube. You've decided that you urgently need a car that is so new it can only be ordered for an undetermined price.

Hmmmm....

You think I should buy the 2013, for a discount now that the 2014s are coming? Is that what you think? And miss out on the new 8 speed transmission, with better gas milage and faster 0-60 times not to mention the improved navigation and electronics? You want me to drive an obsolete car and be the laughing stock of Montana? Is that what you think?

Are you trading in a vehicle?

Talked to the sales guy on the phone and --- of course --- he wouldn't give me the price. Google found it for me. It's about $500 more than the 2013. So I have something to work with.

No, I didn't say I needed it right away. I test drove the 2013 two months ago. Told the same salesman I'd think about it.

No deals on 2014. $500 off on 2013. These cars are selling well and they don't need to discount them. If you want the v-8 instead of the 6, you can get $2000 off, but only on the trim levels I don't want.

120 mile commute is a lot. How many miles/yr will you drive?

If you have time look at other dealers and get the internet prices. 2013s should have a little more drop. They do here anyway

I've got time and can easily walk away from any hustle or hassle.

Spells: I'm done with the 120 mile commute when the semester ends in May. I'm teaching again. I drive 2 hours to the college, teach two hours and drive two hours home. Twice a week. In Montana. No traffic to speak of. Just blizzards and shit.

I had nothing but bad experiences with my Jeep. Piece of fucking Chrysler shit. I was nickled and dimed to the tune of several hundred bucks due to the incompetence of their "factory trained experts" for a simple problem. I would recommend you consider another vehicle make. Do a Consumer Reports search. Seriously. YMMV.

I thought famous writers all had private helicopters and shit?

I'm not sure what that has to do with you, but I was just curious is all.

Why don't you wait until March when the 2015s come out?

I sold a new Outback today. For 25600, list was 28200. I liteally made 150 dollars from the dealer on this transaction. I get another 300 from Subaru direct. The dealership gets 625 dollars profit and 350 holdback from Subaru. There was 775 dollars profit in a new car. If I sell a used anything I get 600.
Look for factory rebates always! They are the ones who can give the most off.
edit: Ford Chevy and GMC run on a much higher profit margin which is why you see 4K and 5K instant discounts.

There was a thread a few years back on here or at the Catalyst Forums about buying a car. It was good, but my google fu sucks tonight and I can't find it.

A car that has a waiting list and has no shortage of buyers?

I'd wait or consider the 2013 series.

Given your age, you should reconsider your commute. That much windshield time is dangerous, and also a significant drain on the few years you have left. Also, just pay sticker. You won't be around long enough to reap the benefits of any savings.

Given Cahill's concern with fires, maybe a Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't the best car for him.
