M.D. vs. D.O.

I won't even get into how many docs and specialists I've seen over the past few months, let alone why, although a few of you know.

So, I had a procedure done earlier this week by a Urologist.....very reputable place. Young guy. All went well, Rx's slightly changed, and he did what he had to do WRT a scope n' scraper going down my pisshole.

Anyway, this Urologist's biz card says he's a D.O., I ask the nurse about this and her 5 second answer is he is basically an MD with way more training and education......to include chiropractic.

What say you on pros/cons of a D.O.?

When our daughter was a baby, her primary care doc was a D.O. but I did not know of this distinction until I told my wife about my Urologist being a D.O.. Our only reason for no longer seeing her is she took an early retirement to raise her own kids.

I was in pre-med after I did my military service when I started college in 1955. In those days the MD's considered DO's quacks. The difference was DO's believed that healing was primarily by good blood flow to the affected areas while MD's believed that healing was only by providing the correct drug to the system. MD's thought that spinal and/or joint manipulation(DO training) was pure bullshit and that only surgery could fix that.
By now the all out war between the two philosophies has evolved to sort of a truce and they agree on many of each other's methods. In fact for example, Michigan State has two med schools on campus, one for MD and one for DO. DO's and MD's have the same privileges at most of the same hospitals. There is little difference except that MD's still lean primarily by trying to heal everything with drugs and chemicals. Neither gives much training or education in nutrition for good health and supplements still remain basically on the sidelines unapproved by the FDA.
