I'm a little late to the party, but I recently caught this on pay-per-view and also thought it was nothing short of an outstanding film.

My understanding is that the story was supposed to take place here in St. Paul, Minnesota, where there is a large Hmong population, but Minnesota in its infinite socialist wisdom, made it not cost-effective to film here, so the studio took their pail and shovel and went to play in Michigan's sandbox.

I also thought it was a great film.

The ending was truly a work of art. Showing that a grouchy crusty old dying dude that says nigger, zipperhead, fishhead, gook, etc. isn't really a racist but does what he needs to do to protect his friends regardless of their race. Instead of maybe getting a slap on the wrist for harrassing people, the bad guys go to jail for murder. If he had dropped a couple of them first it wouldn't have worked. He woulda been the bad guy then and the Hmongs would've collected big bucks for a hate crime by a crazy white guy.

How did ya like the part where he's teaching the kid how to talk to the barber? "Hello, you old Italian sonofabitch. Gimme a haircut."

Great flick. No doubt about it.

I finally got around to seeing this. Holy fuck - awesome. I was not expecting that ending, great movie.

And the daughter "We eat cats, not dogs."

and, by employing 32 actors and 56 crew, accounted for half of the state GDP during filming in 2007.
