I did it a few months ago.

It's fine. The average dude will figure it out and go about their business.

The nerds here will probably turn this into a 13 page thread about linux or ubuntu or whatever the fuck they think anyone gives a shit about.

It's supposed to be a combo of 7&8. I only have 7 and I'm worried that I might get fucked up with it. But the 9,675 trillion pop ups I've gotten is wearing me down. #-o

7 was better than 8, I definitely get that.

Maybe just make sure the highest earner in your stable can work a few doubles so if your machine shits the bed, you can get a new one.

I worked in Corporate IT for a number of years before I went back to school. Things I have heard from former colleagues or read myself:

-Unexplained BSODs on the upgrade.
-Forced updates that cause a BSOD (I believe all updates are forced in 10).
-Released without a whole boatload of drivers, which are not forthcoming. I would check each and every piece of hardware installed to see if it was supported.
-Massive privacy issues, must use a Microsoft account. From the EULA:
"Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement."

What's a BSOD?
Updates are always forced with what I have(7). And every time they do it, certain things are changed around so that I have to fuck around trying to figure out how to do the new stuff. I hate that. Have the feeling they don't like me using Google Chrome. But note that I'm a computer moron.

If they had called it Windows X, I would have upgraded. Much edgier.

I went from Windows 7 to 10. It loads faster and just seems to run things faster on my machine.

I use Google Chrome. It works the same. Same bookmarks.

I only use a couple of word processing programs, another for one for scripts, and a data base. I pin these often used programs to bottom of the screen (task bar). They come up when I move the cursor down to the bottom of the screen. Then I click on them and program comes up.

Cortana is a voice activated thing, also on the bottom left. I seldom use it, but it worked when I tried it. But just click on Cortana and ask it (or write your question) and it will tell you, for instance, "how to delete programs." Pretty much saves you the trouble of remembering that stuff.

With few exceptions people seem to like it more than 8 but less than 7. Even so, if you have a Windows7 machine you want to run for a while yet, and you qualify for the free upgrade, I'd take it at some point. I think after offering this free upgrade Microsoft will not support 7 as long as they did XP. (Once they stop releasing security updates for 7 you won't want to run it any more.)

The upgrade is not quick but it seems to be pretty painless so far. I had one person that had to roll it back - you have thirty days to roll back if you change your mind - it was quick and painless.

There have been some application software compatibility issues but anything mainstream that's OK with 8 is probably OK'd for 10. (If software it isn't OK'd for Win10, you may not be able to get support, so you probably wouldn't want it even if it works for now.)

This will be the last version of Windows, which is OK with me.
But when I stand in front of the mirror and really look, I wonder: What the fuck happened here? Jesus Christ. What a beating!

We upgraded it on:
My desktop PC, used with CAD/CAM software, Photoshop, Illustrator, Video editing software and other business software
My wife's 4 yer old Dell laptop.
My daughters fairly new Dell laptop used at college
A cheap Asus Windows 2in1 with detachable keyboard.

Absolutely no problem on any of them. I like it more than Win 8 and more than Win 7. I would not want to go back.

Thanks Tim! That pretty much covers the same situation I have. So I'm gonna bite the bullet and do it.
I've been thinking about doing voice activation for writing. By fingers are getting shaky and my typing has gone to hell with all the typos and having to go back to correct all the time.

I replaced my five year old Dell that had Win 7 on it with a Win 8 Dell when they priced them to clear in advance of the Win 10 launch.

I had already bought my wife a laptop last December with Win 8 on it. She was my guinea pig for it, so I was already well aware of how bad it sucked.

Even so, I only had 8 for like a month and it irritated me no end. So I jumped at the free Win 10 upgrade.

In its favor, I've had it for like what, four months, and it hasn't enraged me.

Upgraded based on this thread. No big deal. Things look a bit different and I never use the Window's screen, just the old desktop.. so...
It did take over Adobe pdf and replaced it with Windows pdf reader.

go to control panel>programs>default programs<set default programs and you can set what programs open what types of files.

I prefer acrobat, and still use that as the default
