If people can't afford to eat on what is paid then they won't take the job.

We saw what happens when the minimum wage went up. I live in a State that lets us pump our own gas. Kiosks went up at McDonalds and other places. More automation.

I've read some unions link their wages to the minimum wage. I was in two unions and did not see that.

Got into a piss contest with someone a while back. I went to the BLS back in 2020. I took each year's minimum wage. I used the BLS inflation calculator to figure it to 2020 dollars

The average in 2020 came out to be $8.11 an hour. Probably isn't much different today.

If people want $15.00 an hour so be it. There will be more unemployment and a lot more automation. The people who have the least education will be the ones who get fucked the hardest.

The minimum wage is taking the place of unions.

The unions ensured some guy with a high school degree could live a good life. Now everyone is clawing to get a college degree, running themselves into huge debt, to make a decent living. Stuck with huge loans you can’t get out from under. It’s sad. The place I work is part of the problem, although in my specific job we are 100% soft funded (all external money, no tuition).

If the people are forced to live on starvation wages, there will be eventual revolution of some kind, political or otherwise. They can vote.

The issue isn't with unions or a lack thereof. The unions are the reason we have a minimum wage, and their incentives in the early 1900s were as racist as Jim Crow laws.

The minimum wage keeps the less skilled out of the workforce. This impacts the less educated the most, which happens to be young people and those who tend to come from less stable environments.

You're not supposed to be 25 and working for the minimum wage unless you're handicapped or fresh out of prison. The least-skilled workers are, by definition, doing a job for which there is a plentiful workforce available. It takes very little skill to flip a burger on a timer. It takes a lot more skill to, say, engineer a bridge.

I have plenty of tasks I'd be willing to pay someone $5 or $6 an hour, but not $15.50, which is what it's supposed to be next year in CA. They're low skill requirement tasks, they'd free up the 10-20 hours I spend in the evenings after working all day that I spend on them, and if the person wanted to learn how to do this work, they'd gain experience that would pay back a lot more than $5 or $6.

Perfect for a high schooler or junior college student, but instead I do them.
