Surprised to find out this is a relatively new song, written by Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service) for The Monkees in I think 2016.

I used to watch the Monkees TV show when it came out in 1966 and bought their first record album. I liked this song. They weren't the Beatles which is what they were intended to be, but the show was often very funny.

Jimi Hendrix did his first American tour with the Monkees in 1967. The audience for the Monkees was a lot of 14 year old girls. Not a Hendrix crowd. His manager Mike Jeffreys, a gangster who stole a fortune from Jimi, thought it was a good decision for Hendrix. Hendrix dropped out after a week. There were fabricated rumors that the DAR, the Daughters of the American Revolution, said he was too obscene to be on stage with the Monkees.

This is probably their biggest hit. It's the studio version and not the video which is from the Monterey Pop Festival from June 1967. It was the end of the Mamas and Papas. They hadn't played or rehearsed in a long time and were dreadful. Following Jimi Hendrix who almost no one had ever heard of was impossible. The music was changing, and they were out.

The Phlorescent Leach and Eddie were Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, vocalists, of the Turtles which had a string of hits in the 60s. They ended up in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. At a concert at the Rainbow in London, some crazy threw Zappa off the stage. He was in a body cast and a wheel chair for a year. He had back pain for the rest of his life. Kaylan, Volman, and everyone else on stage except for the guitarist were with the Mothers and formed a band called Flo and Eddie who I heard in a bar. They were really good. Drummer, Aynsley Dunbar, had a chance to play for Hendrix. He auditioned, and it was between him and Mitch Mitchell. They couldn't decided and flipped a coin. Dunbar was out. I think he lucked out. Everybody from the Jimi Hendrix Experience band, Mitchell, bassist Noel Redding, and Hendrix didn't live all that long. Dunbar is still here.
