Danner boots knockoffs
Not sure if this should go here or in the FS forum but I'll go ahead and put it here. I am looking for a boot like the one below but I am sure as shit not going to pay $300 for it. It's a damn nice boot but there must be a company that makes one like it for half the price or even less.
TIA!

Re: Danner boots knockoffs
One of my kids was drooling over some Danner's recently but the cost was too high so he ended up with a pair of Salomon's that he likes a lot. I tried them on and they seemed quite comfortable. They felt like they had a lot of ankle support which I guess isn't surprising considering their history.

Cool, I'll check them out. Same style as what I posted?
Re: Danner boots knockoffs
Just a thought. I have my original flight boots from when I went in the Navy in 1985. They've been resoled three times. They were issued to me, but if I had bought them, that would have been $10/year at your price.
Other thought, if boots are comfortable right out of the box, they are probably too supple. They do need to fit right out of the box.
Not endorsing the Danner, $300 is a chunk of change, just saying think as though you'll have them for 20-30 years, and remember when you buy quality you only cry once.

Can they be resoled and how much would that cost? Gotta factor that in. If they can't be resoled, they won't last 20 years with regular wear.

Re: Danner boots knockoffs
May I ask why you need heavy leather boots.
I've done a lot of walking in rough terrain over the last 30 years or so. I do it for a living and I've gone to light weight hikers. I don't think high topped "ankle support" boots protect your ankles. Frankly, I think they are ankle breakers.
You (OK, me): I only need boots like that for snow or if I'm going to be on a lot of talus slopes. Or if I have to carry a pack over 60 pounds.
go light weight. My advice.

What about Minnesota-made Red Wings? Pretty sure most are under $150 and they have a huge variety.

Hiking? I'm not going to use them for hiking. I will be using them to work in the yard, chainsaw/chop wood, build trails, etc. I just really like the style. I may just wear them around as well.
HVLN, I have 2 pair of Red Wings that I got through work when I was with Time Warner Cable.
This pair that I really like.
And this pair that I don't really care for.

Have had my two pairs for 10 years. Both have been resoled but they have held up to hiking, manual labor, hunting, you name it.

My favorite was Montrail Hard Rock. But then Colombia bought Montrail and screwed up the shoe.
I like the whole OBoz collection and prefer low cut to high cut. These are great shoes but a titch heavy for my taste.

The 1000 Mile Boots are aight but if you're going to drop that kind of coin on a boot, get yourself a custom pair of White's Semi-Dress boots from bakershoe.com - $440, an infinite range of leathers and details. I've got a pair each in Chromexcel brown and one in black, I figure with care and resoling they'll last me forever.
Check Ebay for Danner factory seconds. I got a pair of hot weather RAT boots (USMC combat boot of the moment, IIRC) for $85 that I can't find the flaw on. Great boots, I just wish they were a little shorter.
