WWE: The Legacy Of The AWA- Disc one

Post by Bob Wildes »

Outstanding documentary of Vern Gagne's organization.

I didn't know much about this Minnesota based organization, but some of the wrestlers were
familiar.

I'm not that much of a "Wrasslin" follower, but this DVD was one of the more interesting documentaries
I've seen in several years.

There may be other places to get it, but I saw it on Netflix. :supz:

The AWA documentary is one of the WWE's very best releases from the ones I've seen. For sure great shit if you were and AWA fan.

My first wrestling toys were an AWA ring with Rick Martel and Baron Von Raschke figures.

My world was Studio Wrestling in Pittsburgh. Bruno Sammartino, Professor Tanaka, George Steel, etc. Great times.

I watched WCCW first (Von Erichs), then WWF. Then I started renting UWF, Mid-South and NWA DVDs and got all into that and AWA (on ESPN) and tuned out on WWF. Then everything (lucha, puroresu, etc).

What is the real story on the USA Greco Roman wrestlers not being allowed to compete in the '52 Olympics?

That sounded a bit fishy to me.

The Road Warriors documentary is awesome if you are a Road Warriors fan (they were my all-time at-the-time favorite probably...I had a poster of Animal doing curls on my wall when I was like 11-12...and I beat up a kid in 7th grade 'cause he stepped to me over me saying that Demolition was a rip off of the Warriors).

The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior is great (and will be heavily influencing my forthcoming Ultimate Warrior Stage Light Show).

The Roddy Piper one is good too. And as an aside I have incoming right now like 14 discs of EVERY Piper's Pit segment ever!

Also not a WWE release but the new documentary on GLOW rules it. I love GLOW but never really think about it when I think about what I watched.

I liked GLOW around :supz: 85-86. Many of those chickadees were quite fine.

Very cool, piper is a certified rasslin' genius. If someone put out a set of the pre WWF piper stuff, that would be perfect.

I can link you to wear to get this (the complete set would include all his WWF stuff too and would total 21 discs) if you are interested. I know the guy and he is good quality. Much cheaper than that amount of discs would indicate too...I don;t know the price per disc but would be surprised if it wasn't under $50 total.

ON THIS DAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY

1960 - Verne Gagne was named the first AWA world heavyweight champion on Minneapolis television. The storyline is that the Minneapolis promotion, upset that Verne Gagne, the longtime No. 1 contender, had not received an NWA title shot for years (the NWA was mad at Gagne for touring as U.S. champion unaffiliated with the NWA and cutting down on world title bookings) and gave them a 90 day ultimatum to make a Pat O'Connor vs. Gagne title match. This was all storyline, as the Minneapolis promoters, led by Gagne himself who had purchased controlling interest from Tony Stecher, didn't want to book O'Connor in the first place. So Gagne was announced as the first champion, and dominated the belt for the next 21 years.
