Date: Saturday, April 23rd 2011
Location: Suwanee Town Center Park located at the intersection of Lawrenceville Suwanee Road and Buford Hwy.
Times:

7:30AM -5K Start & CrossFit 5K "Angie" Start
8:00AM BLIMPIE Fun Run Start
8:30AM 10K Peachtree Qualifier Start
This presents an interesting situation. This event is sponsored by "No Excuses @fit", home of Kyle Maynard, the amputee phenom. The event is also run by and raises funds for an organization for children with special needs.
Now HQ may or may not have allowed the use of the @fit name for this event BUT don't you think that if they did, there would be a link on the sponsor's page to HQ ?
If they didn't;
1. Do they have their legal attack dogs go after a benefit for disabled children (and one of their own poster boys by proxy) ?
2. If they don't attack, then what would stop any other affiliate from using the name in a charity event ?
3. At what point then, does the name become part of the common lexicon and lose all branding (like Pilates) ?
4. Can HQ afford to just sit silently by and not unleash the hounds ?

Re: The couch thread
Haven't our resident lawyers already concluded that they really can't enforce @fit as a brand name since they aren't selling franchises. I think it's already too late for them to sick their legal dogs on anyone. They pride themselves in saying @fit is everything and everything is @fit.

You can SEO the shit out of your site and make everything look like a @fit page/site and they can't do a thing about it.Ed Zachary wrote:Haven't our resident lawyers already concluded that they really can't enforce @fit as a brand name since they aren't selling franchises. I was still withdrawing from the kool aid back then. But I thought the focus at that time was making fun of Vibrams monkey feet shoes.

It is such a shit storm that they sit on a video and call bullshit on the leaders and questioned the standards used by these guys. NICE!

Re: The couch thread
They could've avoided this by selecting things where movement standards aren't that big of a deal. I mean, CF standards for box jumps, pushups, etc are just weird (I don't know what they actually are, I'd have to watch a CF video that doesn't involve andro babes). It's clear the only thing they've really thought through rigorously is how to get the $10 entry fee from people...
EDIT: and, seriously, who demands "squat clean and jerks"? requiring a squat in it penalizes the people who are strong enough to power that thing up without even bending the knees. they don't want somebody to donny shankle this workout is the thing. I'm not as offended by their insistence on a jerk rather than push presses.

Re: The couch thread
But there is no insistence on a jerk.....They can come out of the squat into a thruster, push press, press, push jerk or just jerk it. It's basically,"get the bar to the bottom of a front squat anyhow and then get it overhead anyhow". It's amazing that they have a video to show what the "standards" are !tzg wrote:They could've avoided this by selecting things where movement standards aren't that big of a deal. For the few who can handle the weight, this will be "pick the bar up, thruster, throw the bar down..repeat for 5 minutes".

Re: The couch thread
Well, if you can press or push press, then, whatevs. Still silly to insist on the squat. I couldn't bother to watch the video because, well, why the hell would I watch the video? I don't care enough. I barely care enough to write this comment because of the mild douchenfreude the whole phenomenon gives me.

How cute. She thinks this is about something other than $$$.Naive Online Workout Competitor wrote:I am not mad or upset as I believe I have submitted a valid performance and if people/affiliates want to get to the regionals by cheating then so be it. I performed to the standard set and anything less than that even though it ended up being allowed, I feel would be a poor representation of myself, my coach and my gym.
I would like to know, how many affiliates are being watched by HQ for validating inadequate performances. Will we actually see any gyms have their affiliation revoked?

Re: The couch thread
the vast majority of @fitters will submit honest times and scores, but there are going to be people that are going to cheat, every sporting event has that, people trying to get an edge. Its a fact of life.
When you have a million dollar purse at stake, some people will do whatever they can to get a chance to win that.
The excuse that the cheaters will get exposed at regionals is pointless, because cheaters can hurt a person who put up a legit score and prevent them from moving on.

Re: The couch thread
"Cheating". There's a difference between cheating and doing whatever you can get away with in front of a judge. In the context of something like this, if the judge's word is final and the judge counts what you're doing as good, you're good. To compare to baseball, this is like the umpire making a bad call when the ball beat the runner - the runner benefits but didn't cheat - as opposed to deliberating cutting corners rather than touching the bases or putting superballs inside your bat or throwing a spitball. This is mostly what's going on, there aren't that many people truly cheating here.
But, hell, what the hell do I care? This whole thing is just silly, but I find some mild amount of entertainment in watching the whole thing mismanaged.

I'm mildly amused that someone figured out how to make $$$ by having people pay to have other people watch them workout. It's the ultimate bro scheme.tzg wrote:This whole thing is just silly, but I find some mild amount of entertainment in watching the whole thing mismanaged.

The truly amazing thing is that the site only works well for taking your money, not for submitting and watching videos, apparently.protobuilder wrote:I'm mildly amused that someone figured out how to make $$$ by having people pay to have other people watch them workout.
