Oh yeah, Kelly Starrett apparently has no fucking idea about the realities of heavy strength athletes, with his lame and cherry picked rant against ibuprofen in one of his latest blog posts.

Cherry picked because the evidence against ibuprofen in those situations is very circumstantial and extrapolated. I can see where he's coming from but it's extremely toolish.

The CFSF blog is more useful than most of the CF affiliate blogs. I'll give you that.

This only demonstrates another problem with @F. By doing random shit on a regular basis and never adapting, @Fers are typically in a DOMS state all the time, hence the abuse of NSAIDs.

Oh wait, I forgot. The problem is with the athlete, not the programming. Duh.

Now this I don't get.

@F is now trying to hang on the coat-tails of Travis Bagent the arm-wrestler?
http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/Cros ... Bagent.mov
All he's going to do is go to the Gaymes and school some arrogant @Fers...or do I smell a new cert??? #-o

Between the short clips of his strength training on the @F video and this clip here,

his strength training would appear to consist of cables, DBs, and BBer-type exercises.

What would be funny would be if he got hooked on the work capacity Kool-Aid only to start losing.

Or maybe he just needs 2-3 years of "rebuilding" before he'll be set right again...

Arm wrestling is really, really specialized.

That's all there is to that. You neglect your sport specific work you might as well kiss it goodbye unless your name is Brznk.

If Chris McCormack came to you and said “I want to win Kona this year (again)” how would you train him?

I’d tell him I can’t train him. An athlete like that is such a specialist that it would take me 2-3 years just to get him moving correctly enough to handle what I wanted to do to him. If I had 2-3 years and we could change his nutrition, and put some size and strength on him, all the while he still could move efficiently, then I would never let him do an unnecessary mile or minute of training again. Unfortunately, he probably wouldn’t be able to wrap his head around that, and have a break down, and secretly go out and swim/bike/run real long. I can’t give you his code for training because they are all different, but I can tell you he would not only not survive with me but would not win Kona if I only had a year.
A legit coach would have said that completely revamping a 36-year-old athlete's program that would result in 2-3 years lost time competitively would be utterly retarded.

It's actually kind of impressive in it's craziness that a guy who hasn't coached so much as a state championship cross country team thinks he can take a 36-year-old champion, shave 2-3 years off his competitive career, and still give him a net improvement over the rest of his career.

I might as well claim I could get Royce Gracie to start winning UFCs again, if I could just convince him to stop doing so much jiu-jitsu for 2-3 years.
The article has inspired (instigated?) quite a firestorm amongst the forum-folks of Slowtwitch, their major beef seeming to be the argument that until people who are utilizing CrossFit and CFE as their training regime start placing higher at Tri’s, then they’re going to stick with their LSD.
Does he respond to that criticism? Because if you're looking at real data like they claim to, it's kind of the whole ballgame.
Coming from someone who's never been anyone, or done anything, that kind of audactiy is absolutely breathtaking. It takes a special kind of self-absorbed cluelessness to be able to spout off like that and have not even a vestigial sense of shame about it.

The gaming of workouts has become standard practice for many of us despite the fact that we have no desire to be 'Best CFer On Earth'. Instead, the focus should be 'How can I bring my weak points up?'. The answer is to put forth the best effort possible on the things you are not good at, even if it means you blow up later on.
Wait. Wha? I thought Couch's ingenious Black Box programming methodology was flawless? Weak points? Effort at things yo'ure not good at? Just follow the WOD. Follow the WOD. It's perfect.

Travis Bagent might beat every CrossFitter at the games in arm wrestling, but he's a specialist, so those wins don't count! It's not a fair match up, obviously.

Whether he does or not is irrelevant since heavy strength athletes constitute roughly 0.0137% of his blog readership. I'm happy for the hate, but you have to remember his audience.

Strength in CF means you use 1" PVC instead of 3/4".

Ok Gin Master, that one just made me laugh.

Not real sure why but I get the feeling I'm watching some Special Olympians warm up.

KStar falls into the "don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but definitely a smart dude" category for me. If all CF boxes ran like CFSF I'd be happy; we don't have to agree, I just need you not to be retarded.

What's the problem when you approach training from the physical therapy viewpoint?

A lot of PTs cum trainers don't get over this.

Lots of competitions this year in the affiliate world. Lots of winners and losers. And some complaining. At what point do objections turn into whining? Can you realistically contest results without looking like a tool?

Is this:

A) an acting class (pretend you're picking up a large stone)
B) physical rehab for the mentally disabled
c) @F level 1 cert?

Once again...the NSAID research Starrett's quoting isn't necessarily done with ibuprofen IIRC>

Picking up a 5 lb medicine ball is one of the 9 foundational human movements. This has been tested, as are all of Crossfit's science-based protocols.

Funny Rip Quote
From a CrossFit Barbell Cert held recently

Rip: Who in this group plays tennis?

(silence, no show of hands)

Rip: Nobody plays tennis?

(silence and shrugs)

Rip: Okay, any golfers n the group?

(silence, no show of hands)

Rip: Are you kidding me? Nobody in this fucking room plays either tennis or golf? Does anyone in the room do anything besides damn CrossFit?!!!
Was he really expecting @F people to play sports where people get paid for being good. It's kinda like guys with cars that are supposedly fast, but they never actually finish them or get them out of the garage...it's easier to win in bench racing than in real racing.

According to some Rip quotes that I've seen, it happened. I wasn't actually there, so it's kinda hearsay.

Given the need so many @fitters have to be percieved as a badass (regardless of the underlying reality), I can totally see a @fit armwrestling cert selling well. I can also totally see a nationwide rash of barroom pwnings afterwards, and a whole new crop of posts on the HQ injury forum.
