Re: The couch thread
Couch's vitriol is understandable. They took away his booze and his pills. He's not a smoker, and he probably hates the other alkies around him for their weakness. Reaming poor BOTO is his only outlet. Regular rehab won't do for Couch. He needs Dr. Drew.

I'm trying to decide how to answer this. My previous method in that thread was to simply ignore the bullshit attacks and answer any legitimate points, but I have the feeling that once I boil off the ad hominem here there's not going to be anything left. I'll give it some thought.
Re: The couch thread
Well, he's still pissed at me.
I guess I could get into a whole thing about how all the fine upstanding LEO guys, who I was told by Couch are so offended by this thread, who posted on CF the day the guy who got rhabdo sued and got made fun of, threatened and mocked on the official moderated CF site where everything that appears is carefully controlled by CF were all cuplable for all the evil shit that was said, but that would ignore the "it's only bad if it's against CF", otherwise its cool because we're right rule, so I won't.
The worst thing I said in the thread is that Couch is fat and out of shape and talks shit about things he doesn't know about. To the best of my knowledge that's not a crime.
Although I had absolutely no control over it, I directly apoligized to Couch for the stuff in the thread I thought was just not cool. The fact the site is unmoderated doesn't mean I personally think everything is OK. I was told that was "water under the bridge". Not so much.

I think you should answer it in ryhmed verse. Highley allegorical and symbolic. A modern day ryhme of the ancient mariner.Brandon Oto wrote:I'm trying to decide how to answer this. He asked about your cadre of trained people and data points based on your program. Sounds straight-forward to answer.Brandon Oto wrote:I'm trying to decide how to answer this. He also defines what is for him the key component of fitness as work done over varying time periods and modal domains, which in non-pontification means high 1RMs of various moves and also high rep rates of lower weights for longer periods, looking for a balance between the two. It is a measurable thing. Is yours?
Don’t believe everything you think.

Yeah. Very open-minded, that Couch. Especially to people like BOTO who dare to question or tinker with the program.Couch wrote:We are perfect in but one respect, our committement to the athelte. we've worked with numerous Olympians, Olympic medalists, repeat medalists, and repeat Gold medalists. We've had athletes collectively in possession of as many as six or seven Olympic Medals in our gym at the same time, and given our small venue this represents a density of "Olympic winners" that approaches the Olympic Podium itself at anthem time.

Can't be me. I'm not a "young man." It probably is me as my Fran times were never anything to write home about. As a matter of fact, I think I did the 45/45 (as opposed to 21-15-9) Fran in about that long. So, HA! Okay.
1. Who are the two shitstain faggot kneegrow trannies with the pathetic S&C characteristics that Couch deems to have "Icon" status here?
2. Oto has a website? What is it's name, how ghey is it and is Kurt J. Wilkens an affiliate.
Any discriminatory name calling I forgot to add?

Re: The couch thread
We need to beat down "work capacity across broad time and modal domains."
This is classic Glassmanian pseudoscience. It sounds like a good, rigorous measure, but really, it doesn't mean anything and you can't measure it anyway.
Calculating mechanical work for exercise movements is notoriously tough -- it varies for each person and you can't compare different types of exercises against each other. I've mentioned this before, but deadlifting 500x1 is not the same as deadlifting 100x5 really fast. Performing a crazy back lift with one inch of motion and 6000 pounds is not the same as pulling 100 pounds to a height of 60 inches. Also, some useful exercises, like gymnastic holds, don't even translate into mechanical work, because you aren't moving anything when you do them.
"Broad time and modal domains" sounds good, but nobody knows what the hell it means. Glassman's definition of "broad" time seems to stop at about 20 minutes, since that's the max length of most CrossFit workouts. They might occasionally go longer, but never into the multi-hour range. I don't think we'll see a 20 mile forced march come out of the hopper at the next CrossFit Games.
Ultimately, if you want to measure a person's fitness in a rigorous, repeatable way, you have to come up with some standard tests that you can apply over and over again. You can pick whatever you want: lifting, sprinting, jumping, endurance, or circuit-type stuff, it doesn't matter: the fittest person by your test will be a naturally talented athlete that trains specifically for your particular collection of events.
Finally, for all his talk about "evidence based fitness," I've never seen Glassman come out with any actual evidence. As far as I know, there are no plots of "work capacity across broad time and modal domains." Glassman has talked about area under the curve on a work vs. time plot as being the ultimate metric, but I've never seen these numbers calculated for anyone, CrossFit or not.
All this talk about evidence is just marketing. Glassman is totally dismissive of exercise science -- since when has he cared what the labcoats say? CrossFit is all about anecdote. Show some pictures of ripped up chicks and bros. Show some Marines doing a WoD -- aren't they hardcore? Like Rant has said, it's all about getting a certain look, or fitting in with a certain crowd.
Nobody that does CrossFit honestly cares about "work capacity across broad time and modal domains," and that includes Glassman.

Re: The couch thread
Ah, back to serious discourse. When I briefly experimented with a Rutherfordesque version of XF, which was basically just alternating WODs with systematically planned strength days, I did achieve a high level of anaerobic fitness and got passably good at a variety of irrelevant movements. I even did a couple muscle ups. (Note to Couch: Check the last couple of pages of Fitness Deployed in the Training Logs.)
When I speak of irrelevant movements, I'm thinking about stuff like sumo deadlift hi pulls and the like. Anyway, my 1RMs in nearly all fundamental movements decreased dramatically. For example, I went from squatting 455#x2 to feeling like 365#x1 was next to impossible.
I'll give XF credit for some creative circuit training, which is not anything original or proprietary, IMO. Other than that, I see little value in it. As we've said here before, between baiting Joowes, Kniggers, and Phags: Unless you are seriously deconditioned your performance will likely suffer in virtually all other areas and modalities across time, or whatever.

Can't rule anything out when it comes to Couch, but I've never done Fran. My 1st CF workout I accidentally scaled up with 2x70 KB presses from a GS-style rack alternated with 225 DL took about that long, but it wasn't Fran and most CFers couldn't have started that workout, let alone finished it.Bram wrote:I believe he's talking about Steven Troy aka Grandpa's Spells.Banned wrote:Well, we all knew he was lurking here. Can't be me. Of course, I'm sure I'd perform fairly poorly at most CF workouts.
Playing the Robb card against whatever powerlifter he's playing it against is curious, as Robb was something like a CA state champ in powerlifting prior to CF.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.
