Couch spends as much time as rant ever did. It's Sunday jackass, shouldn't you go play with your four imaginary kids?

Did you ever see the video of the Glassman's tossing their baby in a pool? Apparently, it was some sort of swimming test, but I'd just call that cruel and irresponsible.

There it is. Of course, if you're going to blow several grand on a pool, you've got to blow another couple on teaching your baby to float (that way you don't have to bother locking the gate). There's no way they could just skip out on the pool altogether, because you know that Glassman uses it all the time for swimming laps.

Will this baby drop technique be covered in an upcoming certification?

How long should I let the kids stay underwater? Tabata kid drops maybe? I think I'll drop my grandson into the pool and then finish off a quick WOD. I'll check back on the little one when I'm done.

I've heard about training the Mammalian Diving Reflex before, but I've never seen it practiced.

That's excellent if you have the time and/or resources to do it.

You don't start out by just chunking the kid in the water. The idea isn't for the kid to float for hours, but to buy a few more seconds' time before an adult arrives. I have taught several children this technique, including my own daughter when she was an infant.

And don't get messed up about the crying kid, either. Most children cry their first few swim lessons.

Frankly, this is the one very cool thing I've seen him do. Fuck all that fitness stuff, this is a father who is prepared. Why not train your kid to survive? It's hardly cruel or irresponsible.

God knows if I drank that much, had a child and an in-ground pool, I would do the same thing.

It freaks a lot of people out. But when I used to teach lessons, I encouraged parents to get their kids in as early as possible--before they had a bad experience with water. Every kid does something stupid around water and ends up getting a pretty big scare. If you can get them in the water early, it will be like second nature to them. Remember, infants have been in liquid longer than they've been on land.

My daughter fell in our pool last year while some people were hanging out with us. They all jumped up and started yelling. I told them she was cool and walked calmly over to the side. She rolled onto her back and floated over to me. I picked her up out of the water, and she was good...until she jumped back in on purpose.

Like most situations, if you can condition yourself to avoid the panic, you'll be able to make better decisions. Kids have an amazing capacity for this stuff.

Werd.
We put all 4 kids through lessons at early ages just for this reason. We've only had a pool for the past 5 years, but our older kids were always around water. So, as uncomfortable as it may be for some of us, we agree with Couch on this one.

Couch, your thoughts?

For my money Hawaiians have it right. Throw them in the water. Who gives a fuck if they get afraid of water, they're getting thrown in next time too. Think of it a paleolithic Polynesian aversive desensitization training. I remember being taken to swimming class at Leahi when I was two, and I just swam around while the other kids learned how, all thanks to my Gramps and his comfort with my distress.

No, I agree....teaching kids to swim is necessary.

I've got buddies who joined the marine corps who told horror stories about urban blacks and the intense fear of water.

Yes. I taught a black teenager how to swim. He was about 160 lbs. and he would squeeze my neck like one of the toddlers. It was awkward to say the least.

According to the Talmud (Kiddushin 29a), a father must teach his child three things: (1) Torah, (2) a trade, and (3) how to swim.
