Re: The couch thread
May I suggest a pole vault , using long pvc pipe, over a 10 foot brick wall, for max reps in 3 mins.

Seriously. Fuck @F.
Working to excel at the above disciplines would need no PVC shit, no bitchy-ass cert, no wall-ball shit and definately would require keeping your shirt on.
Plus you'd probably kick any @Fers' ass with that combo.

Now look. I've eaten a pice of pie.
When we spin the pie again, the area cut out of the volume of the sphere equals fitness.

I actually think that's a pretty good start...we could actually create an event based on the original, valid theory of @F, which was:Fish wrote:Instead of having something silly like the gaymes, why not create some sort of fitness decathlon? They could do ten different events that are pre-designated, and have a set scoring system to go along with them. As gay as something like that sounds, it could be pretty fun.
For example day one could be:
100m dash
Clean and Jerk 1RM
Squat - 315 x Max reps
Bench Press -225 x Max reps
400m run
Day two could be:
Deadlift 1RM
Kettlebell Long Cycle 2x70 - max reps in 3 minutes
Chin-ups(strict) - BWT x Max reps
Long jump
1500m run
I'd drop the 1500m run and add in a 5k. I'd drop the long jump and add something to test accuracy. You could add some kind of balance beam or slack line or something. That pretty much covers everything @F claims to be, but really isn't. That might not be "The Fittest Person On Earth," but that's one damn fit individual.proficiency is required in each of 10 fitness domains: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy.

Classy. Just classy. Maybe they could start having @F kids wearing these shirts too:

Re: The couch thread
In for the IGX gathering. That list is as good as any. I agree the 5K has some worth, but I'll go ahead and cede that event to whoever wants it. That's 22-23 minutes of me wishing I was somewhere else.JohnnyBadAss wrote:I actually think that's a pretty good start...we could actually create an event based on the original, valid theory of @F, which was:Fish wrote:Instead of having something silly like the gaymes, why not create some sort of fitness decathlon? Max Pull-Ups
Hike w/50lbs backpack for time/distance
That would be pretty awesome actually and wouldn't need a lot of equipment.
The WFH could probably be replaced by something like a broad jump or such but is definately much cooler.
Dividing it up into a strength and an endurance day makes more sense to me.
Doing a max dead after a day of repetition squats, sprints, 400m dashes and whatnot would be death.
The 5k run shouldn't be that high impact to really make a difference.
the whole thing seems ghey as fuck. how is this not crossfit?
do a sport. have fun while not losing wife, kids and sense of humor. that muthafucka is fitness .
here is a paragon of human achievement from the power and bulk board....
work all day on a sunday, drive home drink 9 pints of ale, load lopsided stone to a rickety keg with a huge fucking grin.....
fitness. do you see it?

+1. I have relatively recently learned the joys of this approach. Want broader fitness? Do more sports.Charismatic megafauna wrote:do a sport. have fun while not losing wife, kids and sense of humor. that muthafucka is fitness.

I have said it before...if you want to be overall "Fit as F**K" model your workouts around stuff like this. In my opinion Strongman training is the shit for all around fitness and general badassed-ness.Charismatic megafauna wrote: the whole thing seems ghey as fuck. how is this not crossfit?

Hell, Jacop posted about this guy over on Dan John's Q&A. This guy could probably out perform most @fitters.

This is done on Saturday, on Sunday I walk the same path but 5 mile this time caring a weighted rucksack. I stop to do chins:" with the rucksack onat a bar " in the woods I have between two trees every lap for a total of 70 reps for a total of 2 hours. It has taken a year to build up to this many reps and my goal is to do 500 kb reps over1 mile and 200 reps chins over 5 miles. After I reach this goal I will add weight to the rucksack and start caring the beast. I just wanted to get some advice on what I should be doing on other days of the week. I don’t want over train and I don’t want to under train I am 43 and the weekend leaves me blasted. Thanks for all the help

Whoah, slow down there. This was put out there as a beer drinking gathering, not something to train for. Ideally there would be some strippers, throwing, and wrasslin', as well.Charismatic megafauna wrote:the whole thing seems ghey as fuck. how is this not crossfit?

JBAss was correct in that these would be nice marks for somebody interested in broad fitness with no sport-specific goals. @F, as a concept, is pretty good. Then, enter Couch...

I think Steve Justa should do a boot camp for recovering crossfitters.

Hey, that fucker doesn't have any calves either. I guess I really shouldn't be surprised since it seems to be a tread over there. I wonder what he's really fit at? By the look of it I would guess maybe walking.Resident Quack wrote:Classy. Just classy. Maybe they could start having @F kids wearing these shirts too:

Re: The couch thread
That's beastly right there. Moving 765# over a 2 1/2" range of motion is a lot tougher than moving 500# for a full ass-to-grass squat. Do the math.
Also, notice how at the end he just tosses the weight back onto the rack like "This weight's so weaksauce that I won't even bother racking this shit right. Fuck it." So beast. Is that Magnus Samuelson?

Re: The couch thread
That's it! Another missing piece to the Elite Fitness puzzle!
The hood must be worn at all times! Think of the work capacity this will add to pull-ups!
That guy really is Xtreeem. I wonder if he's been recruited by @FHQ yet. He hasn't even ratcheted up the intensity enough for us to see his (or his awesomely belted and gloved spotter's) 20% slop...

Re: The couch thread
Apropos of that, a friend and I actually did some tinkering to develop a suite of tests based around a modified version of Dynamax's 10 physical skills. (Because the answer to "wtf does 'fitness' mean?" should not be "work capacity!") For various reasons we ended up with:
Metabolic endurance:
1600m run
5k run
Tabata row
400m run
Strength:
1RM deadlift
1RM front squat
1RM shoulder press
1RM weighted pullup (bodyweight is included in score)
Muscular endurance:
2 minutes of deadlifts @ 50%
2 minutes of front squats @ 40%
2 minutes of shoulder presses @ 40%
2 minutes of strict pullups, unloaded
Flexibility:
Posterior hip
Straddle (split)
Shoulder rotation
Power:
1RM power clean
Standing long jump
Speed (this is sketchy):
Max alternating-foot rope skips in 30 seconds
100m run
We came up with a testing protocol and a normalized scoring system. All of it needs to be tested for feasibility and polished up (for instance the speed category is kind of dumb) and we couldn't come up with anything halfway decent for accuracy, agility, etc. Let me know if anyone's interested and I can toss you more of the material by PM or whatever.

Re: The couch thread
Seems solid to me. Perhaps we need a full week of contest, beer/gin drinking and food consumption. Not sure what else to give for speed. 100m pretty much nails the requirement. Could go with a 40 yard or something instead.
Re: The couch thread
Speed is weird because of the actual definition Dynamax uses, which is how fast you can repeatedly cycle the same movement (versus how fast you can change between different movements, which is agility). It's a nice formal definition but I dunno how you test it in a way that has meaningful carryover. So we tried to do footspeed. But maybe it's smarter to just ignore the original definition and make it "how fast you can run a short distance."
