It will be humorous to watch. One might think that they would want to show their strongest skills when they get on TV, stuff the couch potato absolutely can't do, so that people would be impressed (ie. strongman). They've done quite the opposite. Here's the Friday night schedule on ESPN3:
07:00 PM ACTION SPORTS XGames X Games 17
07:00 PM TENNIS US Open Series Mardy Fish vs. Igor Kunitsyn (Quarterfinal Match)
09:00 PM BOXING FNF Victor Cayo vs. Lamont Peterson
09:00 PM FITNESS CrossFit Games Crossfit Day 1
09:30 PM FOOTBALL CFL Toronto Argonauts vs. Edmonton Eskimos
09:45 PM SOCCER FIFA U-20 World Cup Brazil vs. Egypt
People know that they can't just go do the other things up there, those are professionals.

However, anyone athletic can do an L-sit, throw a softball, swim, run on the beach, do air squats, etc. It may not be many, but they can do some amount right out of the box. People watch WSM, high-level gymnastics, and OLY on TV because it's so hard to wrap their head around doing those things at that level. The only thing that they will be able to sell this on TV with is the "drama", because nothing on the screen will be impressive to anyone who did high school PE.

The lack of well-roundedness of some of these eleeet athletes in the swim, handstand walk, and softball throw will shake the Kool-Aid foundation of many of those watching.

I think the weighted pull-up (and those trying to kip it) will really be an eye-opener. Talk about how to set up SLAP tears...throw a light ball and later do weighted kipping pull-ups.

This will truly show what they are best at...causing unnecessary injuries through poor exercise choice and programming.

LOL.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH!!!

This is great. These asssholes really are geniuses at picking stupid shit. I was thinking of something stupid like loading pallets or some stupid crap, but...softball throw? L-sit contest? This is Couch & Co. saying fuck Reebok, fuck ESPN, and fuck all you stupid asses who followed @F. It's going to get really damn embarrassing when your exercisers start trying to do what athletes do.

Even the Barry Coopers of the world are feeling some buyer's remorse.

a good and close friend of mine is a beast. A pretty good oly lifter, a tough grappler, programs his own @fit and his clients with a strength bias, and is a big mountian biker and cross country runner.

He decided to do a triathalon.

He said swiming, and swimming in open water specifically, was a huge adjustment.

Predict at least one scary moment in the water.

The softball throw will give better and less deadly comedic fails as rotator cuffs drop like couch's belly when he takes off his William Shatner Corset TM at night.

What we couldnt get a shot put or discus throw? This makes us look like a middle school field day!

That looks like hip extension in a core to extremity movement with a little bit of accuracy, coordination, and balance mixed in. What a great way to test fitness!

Nice, a softball throw, because using the olympic standard shot put isn't elite enough.
Comment #23 - Posted by: Joe at July 29, 2011 3:59 AM
Terrible idea on the softball throw. Unless you've been throwing consistently for several weeks leading up, there is a really strong possibility you could hurt your shoulder. Anyone who has ever played baseball or softball knows what I'm saying. Years of hard work preparing for the games only to throw it away, pun intended, in one throw.

Last winter my son did specific arm conditoning and long toss 2-3x a week for 3 months.

First day of practice they threw too much too hard and every kid had shoulder soreness and issues next day.

Shit. Professional MLB pitchers who throw nearly every day and have since they were 8 don't come into spring training and go right into long toss.

The form in these events is pure @F-style embarrassing slop. Or should I say VIRTUOSITY.

Midline stability my arse.

Can you imagine how much of a story @F and R@@bok built up around him, only to lose him in the first leg of the first event? Even the statistics guy at @F said he would win. Makes it tough to do TV (and the dramatic stories required to make "filler" on a boring as hell event like this) on an event when the big names can't be expected to at least finish...

They should have real world fitness.

1. Cotton picking: 12 hours, most cotton wins.
2. Putting part a on part b and using a driver to attach them with a bolt. 8 hours, most parts wins.
3. Start on one side of LA, drive through LA to other side. Fastest time wins.

For part 3, can they use a softball shaped grenade?

How do you go about making predictions on an event that's completely random? It's kind of like picking the winner of a dunking contest without knowing how tall the goal will be.

I watched the livestream for a few minutes. It was women walking backward in the sand and everyone moving pretty slowly. One thing, there were lots of cameras. I was hoping to catch the softball throw as I read above that it was a genius way of testing hip extension and accuracy. If you throw it from a balance beam, it also is a great test of balance.

Of course, if you throw one that weighs 16 pounds, that's even more a test of scale.

Wide World of Sports would have probably loved this, to be honest. When I was young, they would have the Daytona 500 going with Barrel Jumping and lifting. You would watch the race, then they would cut over to the other sports. Watching three days of people walking backward on a beach might not be as exciting.
