Yes.Brutal Bajan wrote:Hmm, even with the gimmicks and novelty aspects aside, wouldn't a novice barbell program coupled with mobility drills and light conditioning (walking 3 days/week, sprinting 1-2/days per week) be far more efficient at getting your average cubicle-dweller "fit"?Alfred_E._Neuman wrote:I'm feeling good today, so I'm going to come at this from a different angle. What you could be left with is a circuit training system using free weights, BW and conditioning with a strong dose of getting off of processed food.
No way it'll go down like that, but it would be nice if it did.

Your average cubicle dweller could vastly improve his/her fitness just by walking up and down the stairs 20-30 minutes a day and doing some stretches.

No shit. But you can't brag to the slob in the next cubicle about how you're hardkoar eleeet for that. That's where @fit marketing is pure genius. Convince people who ordinarily wouldn't be caught dead in a gym that your fitness program somehow makes them superior to their fellow man (in ways other than simply being in the vast minority who exercise).protobuilder wrote:Your average cubicle dweller could vastly improve his/her fitness just by walking up and down the stairs 20-30 minutes a day and doing some stretches.

I think that the one comment, "If she can do it, you can", denigrates the young lady's incredible effort.
Otherwise, although I may disagree with @fit on many things, I applaud Marissa's courage (physical and social), and the willingness of her trainer to accept this challenge. From the brief video, it is clear that this trainer is not one of the 2 day level 1 wonders who would have started Marissa with PVC OHS.
This is also a case where the cult attitude and tribal sense of community can help support someone's efforts and reaffirm their self worth.
Whatever good that's left in @fit comes from the individually owned gyms in the field working with real people and not from the bullshit that spews from HQ and the poster children they tout as "Eleet".

I don't disagree with most of what you've said. I give the trainer credit for time invested and the CF community for taking her in with open arms when many might not.Cave Canem wrote:

However, there is a huge problem with the ideas of scaleability, AMRAP, and "for time", and unfortunately it doesn't look like they're thinking "outside the box" (pun intended) when presented with a client who requires more from their programming. If this were my daughter, she would be lifting, but she sure as hell would NOT be doing power cleans and burpees.

Re: The couch thread
I think in this case that Marissa may be driving the effort to do the workout as close to RXed as possible for her. She stated that she had been going to PT all her life, so I'm sure she's been exposed to machines and PT/OT toys. The extent of the physical effort to complete this workout might be hard for able bodied people to comprehend, it may be easy for her although it looks difficult and even hard to watch for us. Then again it might be excruciating for her. But she is an adult and it's her choice. I think the benefit for her is thinking "inside the box", doing what her mom and friends are doing, doing what she's probably been told she can't, and taking risks. Her rewards are probably more mental and emotional rather than physical.Boris wrote: I don't disagree with most of what you've said. But to get things back on track;
What's her Fran time and how far can she throw a softball ?

This is how the conversation goes:
-Hey man, what do you think about Crossfit?
-If you like it do it.
-Do you know what it is?
-Yeah
-What is it then?
-Basically, random, high intensity workouts done with a variety of implements and movements
-NO MAN! IT'S LIKE GOD GLASSMAN HAS TOUCHED ME WITH HIS PENIS IN MY BAD PLACE!!11!!
-Jesus Fuck.

Also, I have a slowly burgeoning movement called "Strength and Heavy Conditioning". Which is strength work + some fun, short conditioning stuff using a variety of strongman stuff, sleds, suspension trainers, and kettlebells. I flirted with calling it FatFit, and one of guys who does it with me calls it "Night Terror Training" since he wakes up screaming on the nights before he has to come in and do it.

I liked the @fit chick telling me how barbell complexes were like @fit. I said "yeah they do them but never this heavy."

Oddly enough there were zero @fitters at the PL meet I lifted at today. @fit was a frequent topic of conversation, but always lifters talking about people who weren't there. "So and so? Yeah, he started going to that @fit gym."
How do I know there were no @fitters there? If there had been @fitters they would have told all of us.

Back on track here, Shaf, you need to save the @fitters. They know that their precious sport of fitness is turning into this:

You are the Once and Future Guru who will return them to being hawdkaw.

Dude at my commercial gym asked me to spot him doing a snatch balance. I was like, "I don't really know how to spot Olympic lifts" and we got to talking, turns our he "does Crossfit, which is basically just Olympic weightlifting."Ed Zachary wrote:Shafpocalypse Now wrote:Best quote from him:

He then complained for 10 minutes about how cost-prohibitive the local "boxes" are, and he seemed quite surprised when I told him about the Olympic lifting facility that charges $30 a month not 3 miles from the nearest "box." For whatever reason he wasn't that interested.
