1st Annual Recon Challenge

The Challenge will start at 3 am at the San Mateo (63 Area) pool for a pass/fail swim screening. The competition start time is at 4 am, when the competitors will move from San Mateo to San Onofre beach. We expect them to be at the beach from approximately 5:40-7:30 am. The next available location to observe the teams will be at the Camp Horno Obstacle Course from approximately noon to 1 pm. Following some live-fire events, they will move to the finish line at SOI. The finish line will be right next to the family day so that people can support the Marines as they come through. We expect competitors to finish from 3-5 pm.

Concurrent to the competition, we will be running a family day at the School of Infantry 52 Area Landing Zone, just behind the SOI Chapel. The family day will have jumpers for kids, music, free salsa dancing lessons, and games. We will have a barbecue for up to 400 people, and an awards ceremony at 6 pm, and Subway/Pizza Hut will have a vendor stand open throughout the day at the Family Day area.

Approximate Timeline:

• 3 am : Competition starts with a swim screening
• 4 am : Competitors begin the route down to San Onofre Beach
• 6 – 8 am : Competitors are down at San Onofre Beach conducting amphibious fin event
• 8 am – Noon : Competitors Ridge Run
• 10 am : Family Day area opens
• Noon – 1 pm : Free Salsa lesson for kids at the Family Day area
• Noon – 1 pm : Competitors at Camp Horno Obstacle Course
• 1 – 3 pm : Free salsa dancing lesson for ages 12+ at SOI gym
• 1 – 3 pm : Live-fire events near Camp Horno
• 3 – 5 pm : Competitors' finish window.
• 5 pm - completion : BBQ (hamburgers/hotdogs)
• 6 pm : Awards ceremony

Not familiar with BMD, but looking at it briefly indicates some dumbassity. You could put up a satire website about "CrossFit cripples people for money" that somebody could show your boss and you wouldn't have to be embarrassed.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Is CrossFit Injury-Ridden?

Say what!? I am asking the question, I’ll point you to a few facts and you can draw some conclusions, or give me your own answer.

First, let’s get more specific. CrossFit in its standalone form is rather safe as long as you are doing the movements correctly.

I am, more specifically asking, is training for the CrossFit Games, or being a CrossFit Games competitor, too taxing, unsafe, or does it cause you to be injury prone?

One thing you have to keep in mind is that CrossFit is still very much in its infancy as far as a “sport” goes. Especially when it comes to the CrossFit Games. The first CrossFit Games was in 2007, and I as I have mentioned before in, “We Found The Fittest Man in 2009, Are We Still Looking?“, I don’t think the CrossFit Games level of intensity, as we see it today, started till 2009. This is when competitors were reportedly doing multiple CrossFit workouts a day as well as strength training and other forms of functional fitness. Now it is just standard. You have to train like a beast to be a beast. But is this new level of intensity and training, only 3 years old, bad for athletes and their bodies? Let’s take a look at some of the top CrossFit Games Athletes.

What do these three CrossFit Games athletes have in common?

Mikko Salo

Sam Briggs

Graham Holmberg

They are all CrossFit Games Competitors
They have either won or placed in the top 5 of the CrossFit Games
They all have knee injuries!

Sam Briggs and Mikko Salo actually aren’t competing this year due to their injuries. Graham on the other hand had surgery and is back at it full swing.

Some may say that their injuries were caused from other incidents like Mikko having played soccer or Sam from running, but that would come from one source…CrossFit Inc….
Well, Sam Briggs actually said she had a weak knee from running, but the injury was from CrossFit, so that is up for debate. The fact of the matter is they were injured recently and they are training for CrossFit, with CrossFit.

If I started a “sport” that had recently gotten a lot of hype I would blame it on other stuff too, so CrossFit may not be the best source. However, I am not trying to start some conspiracy theory.
Conclusions?

Honestly, CrossFit is too new and there is not near enough data to actually determine if training for the CrossFit Games is dangerous. It is an interesting idea and something to keep in the back if your mind. As I said earlier, CrossFit is still in its infancy and we do not know the long-term effects of trying to train at such a high level for years on end.

Another point, it can’t really be compared to any other sport. Why? Because CrossFit is training. Training is something someone does for sport. But now training = sport. Most sport related injuries are caused from the unnatural movement the sport requires or the physical contact involved in the sport. Most sport-specific injuries are not caused from the training, yet the sport itself. That leaves CrossFit in a whole new category which leaves us with a….Let’s wait and see…

Not to be morbid, but considering how many Gaymes athletes have been hospitalized after competing, and how they don't actually test the workouts, I think this year's stupidity significantly raises the risk of death. Which, would be horrible. Really horrible. But then they'd probably have a fundraiser for the family with an artistic rendering of the competitor's corpse and call it ART when folks complained.
To all trainers and fitness professionals – I ask that you do your part in educating and spreading proper training methodology. Keep the safety and well being of your clients as your greatest priority. Don’t allow any dollar or social movement shift your perspective as to what you know is right. Continue to stay on top of your game and be sharp on what is accurate as you spread the goodness working out has brought into your life. Ultimately It is up to us to shift this momentous moment towards an ending that either changes crossfit’s methodology from the inside out or shuts them down as a whole. Either ending is fine with me, but the voice of change must start with us.

The Pendleton O-course takes about two or three minutes to run with all the obstacles in pay, though it’s much faster for people like Pat Burke, who served in the Marine Corps and has experience on the course. Two obstacles were left out because bar muscle-ups and rope climbs will show up later in the Games.
So they didn't actually run the whole course, they adjusted the bar to fit their goals. They may have shaved a full minute off the course record by doing that! "Crossfit - fitter than the Corps." Fucking Bastards.

Yeah, it's usually 2-3 minutes with all the obstacles, but since they took two out, they're timing people finishing their "special" course in 35-40 seconds. Must be because they are the WORLD'S BEST ATHLETES for surely.
