Police arested them. Then, after proceedings they were released, because they are activists of maidan :)

I wish people were a little more intelligent when trying to make an opinion about Putin and understand that the means of mass information are not a good source for that. Not that he is my hero or a role model, but because he is no worse than any other politician in the world. He is anti-democracy, really? Democracy, as in the American version of it, another kind of marketing? He is against the freedom of speech, really? There is more meaningful critique of government on Russian websites and newspapers than there has ever been in Time Magazine or CNN, both of which is the publishing pit for pocket journalist tigers. Decent journalists are silenced everywhere, including the "cradle freedom", the USA.

From the legal point of view what happened in the Ukraine is a riot. Their El Presidente was legally elected while being in opposition. He won 51 vs 49%, which means he probably had the support of about 70%. By the way, he is not on Putin's good list. He is not even sheltered in Moscow now, but in the regional Rostov. Russian Federation has the agreement with the legal government of Ukraine, legally elected that is, to help in case of problems. That legal government is asking for help, what would be wrong with Russia keeping its contract? Even that aside, the separation of Kosovo from Serbia was ok, because the majority of Kosovars were ethnic Albanians. It was so important to support poor Albanians that USA bombed Serbian capital Belgrade, which is miles away from the area of the actual conflict. (By the way, in terms of taking political problems on civilian population, how is it different from 9/11?) Crimea is 90% Russian, yet the US and EU already declared that the separation referendum will be rendered illegal. How come?

Current sentiment of the West is simple: anything Russia does, except weakening itself is "anti-democratic". Few years ago Yeltsin, the drunk who disgraced his own country on daily basis was passionately supported by the US. The consequences of his rule catastrophic. That was ok. During Putin's rule the standard of living for the average Russian improved manyfold, but that is not going to be noticed by the news agencies. What they will talk about the bad stuff, of which Russia and its government has plenty. Not that other countries don't, but that is obviously beside the point.

I don't really give a fuck about Ukraine or Crime, but the stupidity of the comments in the press are sometimes overwhelming.

I agree with you 100%. Particularly the comments on Kosovo.

Here's my predictions

- Crimea votes to join the Russians
- the west sanctions Russia, and more importantly
- all of the former USSR and border countries start thinking about how to make sure they aren't next.
- the Crimean Tatars, being screwed over for the umpteenth time by Mother Russia, go jihad and start a long cycle of violence with terror attacks and retributions
- it is used as another rallying cry for jihadists

Tatars are about 5% of population of Crimea. And they are also are not "clear nation" for ukrainean nazis :)
